I got to play God late last week.
That's right - your Balladeer
The ruler of the universe
And all things far and near.

I got to sit upon the throne
Complete with magic wand
To cast my will upon the earth,
The heavens and beyond.

Loud thunder came at my command
Bright lightning split the sky
With one small movement of my hand
Or at my slightest sigh.

'Twas not a lot I hungered for
But Destiny is cruel
To take the power of life and death
And hand it to a fool.

I got to play God late last week.
No other could. Instead
With one small, final loving pat
I said, "Doc, go ahead........"

I’ve played that part myself, and would have been glad of these words then.

Exceptional work well written.

Some roles aren't ones we wish to play... even knowing we act with kindness.

sometimes we have to make the right decsion,
and do the right thing.
that does't always mean we are happy about
it.

At some point in our lives we all wish we had more power, I know I have. And then when we have to do something like this, we want to hide, let someone else do it (I did in fact - couldn't face it). With tears running down my face I say only: I know how you feel....

You know, I told you sometime back that you needed to have that mysterious growth looked at (Glad to hear it was just your wonderful, big heart )

ok....ok....seriously Mike, You are inspirational... more often than not, you leave me questioning certain aspects of life....to me, that's simply masterful. I hadn't anticipated the ending of this poem as I was reading it... Well done....Thank you.

Why, thank you, Sally, along with everyone else.

Craig, you are right, of course, as always.

I played Him twice two years ago
And it was for the best I know
As kids grow up, pets older grow
Then both are gone, I miss them so..

Hi, BigR-

I don't get it. Sorry. I get the first 4 stanzas, but the last one leaves me saying, "wassup with that?" and "what did he mean by that?"

Care to explain?

Sorry.... duh... I feel like a ditz. What did I miss? Thanks for your explanation. I'll be looking for it.

Hi, Doreen. Thanks for your interest. Just a little tale of having to put my dog to sleep, thus the final pat and the go ahead words to the vet. That's all.

well, i am sure glad to hear it was "only" the dog...can't imagine how i'd feel if i had to make that decision concerning one of my "babies"...you can weave such lovely poetry from any subject, you know i admire your style, but don't mind saying it again...masterfully done indeed
