Alis Volat Propriis
(She Flies With Her Own Wings)

For many years, he held her back
He told her not to dream
He was like a river wild
She like a gentle stream

She craved for love and happiness
But kept it all inside
Spent her days in quiet fear
Tethered by his side

She watched the sky with wishful eyes
And dreamed of when she'd fly
Cried herself to sleep at night
As life just passed her by

Caged by lifes own cruelty
She was captured in his grasp
While he raised his hands in anger
Hers in prayer she clasped

One day her prayers were answered
For she left him far behind
Released the chains of hurt and hate
And all the ties that bind

Now she flies with her own wings
In skies pearlescent white
Loosed from the bounds of all her fears
She soars in graceful flight

Where she lands will still be seen
The worlds an open slate
She'll write a story all her own
For now she holds her fate

At last she's free, no longer caged
And no matter where she'll roam
Those injured wings, now greatly healed
Will guide her safely home

Sir Hoot: Did she live or die? I can read it both ways in this wonderful piece of work, so I am not sure. I hope she lived. So much better that way. If not, than she is one with the angels.

Smiles, Andrew...I really take offense to being called Sir...maybe mi'lady would be more appropriate. Anyway, she lived and I am still here to tell about it...the poem is about myself

Beautiful lines, hoot. I'm so glad you flew over us. Care to sit a spell?

Yikes! Hoot's a m'lady??? I guess
I'll rethink of you as Hootess,
Instead of Hoot, as I once assumed
When I first saw you in this room.

m'Lady - that was a wonderful poem! So full of promise for all the angels who have not discovered their wings... yet!

I'M SO GLAD YOU MADE IT THROUGH. MY REAL FATHER TREATED MY MOM LIKE THAT, AND ABUSED ME AND MY SISTER. AFTER HIS TRIAL (HE WAS SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS), HE WAS UOT ON APPEAL BOND FOR 5 YEARS, HARASSING MY FAMILY AND THREATENING TO KILL US. HE IS FINALLY IN JAIL, AND I HOPE HE NEVER GETS OUT. ALTHOUGH I'M 17, HE STILL SCARES ME AND I'M GOING THROUGH A LOT, WITH MY EMOTIONS AND ALL. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO TALK TO YOU AND MAYBE HEAR SOME OF YOUR STORY.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW,
ANGEL

P.S. GREAT WORK. I LOVED YOUR POEM; ESPECIALLY THE LAST STANZA.

I want to thank each and every one of you for all your wonderful comments. This poem is very near and dear to my heart. It recently won an award and is also published in a journal called Our Journey that deals with victims of abuse.

Hootess and Angel Girl

My poem, "The Wind," is along similar lines, although somewhat shorter in length. You might identify with it, too.

This is a terrific forum - I'm glad I found it - there is so much talent in here, and many of the people with talent actually work at it. That is what makes the difference.

Thank you guilt, but more importantly, I gained back my self respect. I have learned a great deal about what I am capable of. I went far too many years existing and not living at all and I feel as though I have got a second lease on life. Life is far too short to waste.

So very sorry about the gender mistake. Years of male gender society based conditioning are sometimes hard to overcome.
Bad thought process! Bad thought process!
If it makes you feel any better, in my younger, long haired days a door-to-door salesman asked if I was "the lady of the house." I chalk it up to the fact that he was wearing coke-bottle glasses.
Wonderful poem, glad it turned out the way it did. Have a great flight.

Beautiful use of self expression. You are extreamly talented. It is not an easy task to write your emotions out for all to read. Thank you for sharing.

This is an awesome poem! You have done a great job. I too was in a situation like that for years. But no more. Thank God!
