Our world so vast & beautiful -
as seen from here above...
The land rolls on for as far as the eye can see.
Yet I wonder what lies beyond -
To leave someone far far behind -
back in a different place...
That is the hardest thing to do.
To hold them close just one last time -
before letting go.....
Stare into their eyes, then turn & walk away...
And wonder what tomorrow brings for you both.
As the land speeds quickly by -
and you soar into the sky...
It's now you let the first tear fall -
and whisper out " good-bye....."

This piece was so emotional-I knew exactly what you were talking about.

I was ok until the stewardess said it was the LAST call for the plane. He spilled coffee on himself and ran down the tunnel to his plane. I've never seen him since, I wonder if I ever will....

Certainly struck a chord with me. Good byes; practice doesn't make it easier.

Reminds me of Kahlil Gibran's "A Tear and A Smile"
"I would not exchange the sorrows of my heart for the joys of the mulitude. And I would not have the tears that sadness makes to flow from my every part turn into laughter. I would that my life remain a tear and a smile."..."A tear to unite me with those of broken heart: a smile to be a sign of my joy in existence."

Do you know this writing?

I've had two airport goodbyes this month. I had to take my students to the airport to send them back home. The first goodbye almost killed me. Before the plane left the ground, I was on the phone crying with his mother "I'm sending him back to you" to which she sobbed "Thank you!". The second one was rushed, so no time for emotions. But it sure hit hard the next day.

You nailed it, PFF!

Another fine work femme. It is so hard to leave someone you love behind even if you know you will return...

good byes are always so difficult, and practice does not make them any easier. this may be due to the fact that you never know if you will see that person again. wonderful piece of work.

quite a heartwrencher, this one...I've had more than my share of goodbyes, and none of them are easy.

I enjoy your writing PFF...you're very gifted!

Thanks to everyone for all your fabulous replies! I actually wrote this while in the plane, looking out the window down below....tears in my eyes....blah blah blah. So yes, I wrote it firsthand! I was in a long-distance relationship at the time with a young man that lived 2,500 miles away! What an expensive romance that was!! But he was worth every penny I spent.....we lasted over a year making phone calls & many trips to visit, but it was just too hard to not be together....I often wonder where he is now...I'm sure many of you can relate to this. Thanks again for all your support!
