The wasted night passes once again and
I sink back into my daily slumber,
Blocking out the pain and the hatred
That burns through my soul.
Those who I love have all made
Haste to the new sky
And I am left here alone
With sword and shield at beckon call..
As the sun rises to greet the new morning,
A darkness blacker than night fills my thoughts.
My mind fills with visions of vengeance,
The only reward that seems attainable anymore.

All things had
have been lost.
All that remains is what I was born with
And the cold steel that I trust my life to.
Wearily I carry my courage and journey towards my fate,
her cold breath breathing down my neck,
Reminding me that I am never without eyes following.
I gather the shards of my soul that I can still grasp
And charge into the darkness to avenge my loss…
To face the gods and make them listen
To the broken song of my lonely heart
And to the forsaken call of my soul,
No matter how deaf their ears.

That was very well done. My sincere compliments. I'm not much on free verse, but I like very much what you have done here.
Welcome to the club.

You have displayed the inner thoughts of a soldier's mind excellently...how well I know.
