Listening to every heart

How would you like to be married to
a man who is a non-dancer?
When the music swings and my foot begins to tap
he looks at me as if caught in a trap.
But for me, he quit smoking so he wouldn’t get cancer.

How would you like to be married to
a man who is a non-poet?
Words are nothing fancy to him, he cares nothing for sighs
and if I were to read this to him, away he would fly.
But he loves me, you know by the way he shows it.

How would you like to be married to
a man who is a non-singer?
I think I heard him mumble once
the anthem to his school song.
But in other ways, he’s quite a swinger.

How would you like to be married to
a man who is non-birthday prone?
Getting older to him just means the passing of another day
and all the hoopla gets in his way.
But he swore he would never leave me alone.

So while he doesn’t dance, sing, or read poetry soft to me
I think you can imagine with whom I’d rather be!
