Holding Back

I will never again
give myself wholly to another
even as I lay, languishing in your arms
our bodies still damp with sweat
naked, as the sun rises in the red morning sky
part of me will always hold back

Yes, those three words may pass my lips
like the sighs that passed over them
moments and hours before
when I cried out your name in ecstasy
and I may even mean what I say, when I say them
but there will always be a part of me holding back
for to give you all of me
would be to lose a part of myself

Yes, perhaps someday
as we drink tequila on a sandy beach
in Mexico, watching the sky turn from blue
to orange beneath the setting sun
I will tell you all of this and more
and maybe I will be surprised to find
that you too are holding back

And as we reach the bottom of the bottle
drinking to where only the worm remains
when everything we've wanted to say, has been said
'till we've convinced ourselves as well as each other
that we have nothing to lose by holding back
just maybe, it won't be so hard to swallow

WOW! This is great work! Loved the metaphor
....in reaching the bottom of the bottle,
and only the worm remaining....so powerful.
Thanks, this was truly heartfelt.

Incredibly well-written. I think we all hold back a small part...it's called survival.

Balladeer, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I guess I am even more guilty of that than others at times because of past history ...trust is a hard thing to earn, and even a harder thing to give sometimes.
Aly and Thursdayschild, thank you for your comments...I appreciate then.

I can relate. And that is a rarity. Wonderful job.

harumppphhhhhh - I never hold back (almost). Another profound, great poem. You must have one heckuva lifetime behind you, old girl. *g*

Long John, I was thinking of this poem after reading your second reply about Hush. I was trying to remember if I posted it our not. Thanks for your comment....and yes, I do have quite a life behind me (much stranger than fiction and if you are interested in hearing a piece of it, I'd oblidge in another format other than here...ie... e-mail) But, I also believe I have quite a future ahead of me since this "old girl" is only 36.

owl...ask LJA how old he is before he calls you old..LOL...he forgets his age, since he acts 25 most of the time (including the times he flirts)

Lady Hoot: Great piece of work here. I agree with Thursdayschild. I understand how one can feel this way, but I can't relate personally as I've never been burned so bad as to not give my all. I guess I'm in a rare and enviable position fully trusting my future and what I have in life, wife and love. A fool in love I'll always be.

Lorelei, You would know more than I regarding LJ's flirting...smiles, and that is as it should be. I think I can guess his age without asking. I am merely a poet hoping to be as lucky as you someday. Thanks for your good humor with my ramblings on.

I swear, (oops! shouldn't swear you know )
I love your poetry! Every single poem that you write is magnificent. No, I'm not over doing it. You know, I try to say nice things about every poem. With your writing, it's not hard!

whew.... another disaster averted,
Though I had slipped and flirted,
With a Hootessa who caught my eye,
Right in front of my Lorelei.

She's only 36 today,
In her prime in a womanly way,
While I am almost old enough,
To be her dad (from free love).

And so, you see, lil Lorelei,
She really didn't catch my eye.
I was winking at just a child,
My inhibitions? Running wild?

I hardly think I will stray,
From the gal who makes me say,
"I love you more than a moment past.
I love you even more than that!"
