sundial, once all coppery and bright
aging to a gentle green, under time's hand
as pencil thin shadows, cast down from the sun
chart the passing of time in fleeting seconds
marking days and years with a fragile shadow

tick
tick
tick
not even a sound

nothing to proclaim the momentous passing of seconds
then hours
then days

no cuckoo, or chimes, or even a bass gong
it stands as a silent soldier
measuring earth's timeline
faithful through driving rain, when time seems to cease
no shadow to be seen then, not even a shadow's whisper
as the sun is cloaked in rain's furious rage
solid and steady in summer's blazing heat
minutes fly by in hasty shadows
when days seem endless and time your friend
silent sundial covered in ice and snow
still time's sentenial if the sun dare show her face
ever faithful through time's passing
marking second by second with a fleeting shadow
disposable time
nonexsistent once the shadow moves on
so unreal, that if time was captured in a bottle
or held in your hand
it would be unseen, unfelt, unheard
leaving us to wonder if it ever really exsisted

Oh, this was delightful! Never thought about a sundial in this way..just saw it as an outmoded garden ornament! Thanks for a great eye opener!
