An old beat up truck slowly pulls
out of the tattered driveway.
Rust defines this aging workhorse
and speaks to the many stories of its life.
A single headlight shines in the
growing darkness of another
fiery Midwest sunset.
The other was broken long ago,
the victim of a child, a rock,
and too much time in a city
where there's too little left to do.
Behind the cracked windshield,
a man, aged not by years,
but by reality, looks back
at his crumbling house
with a twinge of bitterness.
The land he had nurtured
for so many years had
finally forsaken him,
much like everything else in his life,
and now, all he has left is West.
Still looking back,
he catches a glimpse of something
beyond his old house.
For a moment, he sees
the stories of his life,
and recognizes himself
within the rust and broken headlights
and cracked windshields,
and he is no longer alone.

Begins to speak of "Grapes of Wrath..." a bit. Go further with the pain.
