A highway winds
Over an old wagon trail
Around Crabtree Bald,
Past the general store,
The church, its cemetery
With its chestnut cross
For a father taken too soon.
Here snow presses leaves into loam
That steam into haze.
Stones mark in line,
A span of one hundred fifty years
From the ruts of those first wagon wheels
Straight up the hill
To Bill Rogers' barley field.
There one can see
Winter-lean trees on mountain tops
Serrating the sky like hog bristles.

Under ice
Morgan's Branch flows down to Fines Creek,
Fed by warm springs
Where salamanders wait
For the first mild wind
That brings the sound of dulcimers.

On the bend of the highway
A boy waits for the yellow bus.
In morning fog
He throws a stone as far as he can
Towards the creek and listens.
With muddy boots he kicks away
Layers of wet leaves,
Looking for something to move,
Some sign of green
To take with him.

Wow!!!! This by far should have been posted first. What an excellent moving piece that says far more than what the words themselves speak. The flow of this is so natural and the description leaves me along that raod waiting with the boy, searching for some hope, some sign of spring in the dead of winter. EXcellent!!!!

What a wonderful poem! I'm from a very small town in Michigan..this poem evokes memories of that place as I remember it growing up.
