In the space between moments

0 posted 1999-07-01 03:31 PM

An immortal soul dances within eternal nights, barely seen,
His heart almost frozen by the lonely years, a perfect fiend.
Crimson power courses though his body of breathing stone,
And his eyes are hardened by the grief of being forever alone.

His soul cries mortal tears behind a marble silhouette,
And his mind becomes entwined within guilt's intricate net.
For each time life's power flows through his icy lips,
He takes an innocent human life, God's greatest of gifts.

As years of darkness pass in his world of eternity,
He finds that the vampiric gift is nothing more than painful misery.
So many of his kind can kill without a care,
Perform unspeakable cruelty while showing only hateful stares.

More time rushes by and the blood lust finally subsides,
But his guilt of savage death still remains inside.
He cannot live upon the cloak of darkness anymore,
So he decides that on his life he will shut the final door.

His last night is showered by dawn's early rays,
And at that moment he realizes this is the only way.
So within a fiery blaze his vampiric soul is taken,
And never again will he surrender to blood's deadly sin.

I didn't know words could be spun together so beautifully! As I read your poem I found myself more and more entranced, pulled into this vampires misery. It's also a wonderful story, reaching into the depths of how much one can stand of their own guilt, even the immortal. Such power behind a poem! It left me thinking long afterwards. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful use of language to evoke a mental image...
