There's a breed of man who deserves a warm hand,
Smile and raise your scotch or gin
And drink a toast to a man hated most -
The man who couldn't fit in.

Something in his heart sets him apart
From kindred, kith and kin.
Something in his mind leaves others behind.
He's the man who couldn't fit in.

He is laughed at and scorned and, when gone, he's mourned
Men discuss him with a grin.
He's adored and despised and quite criticized
As a man who couldn't fit in.

He's a lover, a dreamer, a builder, a schemer
Oh, the places his mind has been to.
For if it weren't for men who couldn't fit in,
There would be no place to fit into!

But his dedication brings no admiration
For his unpardonable sin
Of standing alone and on his own
Instead of just fitting right in.

So laugh once again at unfortunate men
Who will never be able to win
And let's fill our cups and then BOTTOMS UP!
To the man who couldn't fit in.

I like the lyrical structure of the poem. It lends to the tone, a sadly celebratory tribute to the human condition. I like it.

Another definite winner...I think anyone who's anyone, at one time or another, have also been unable to fit in ... at least I know I can relate...Thanks for sharing it...

The sing-song quality of this meaningful poem made it even more enjoyable. I like your style and the way it flows. This poem is meant to be read aloud! As for the subject matter, wonderfully well put. Everyone can relate to "the man who couldn't fit in", and there is a connection there for everyone to find. Bravo on your work!

Hey... I know that guy! Or as Pogo used to say, "We have met the enemy and they is us!" As usual, well done!

Balladeer,

Not sure how you thought of this
Although your point one couldn't miss
He'd fit in with my group I think
A fitting soul to which to drink
(Great as always)

Final old posting bump up from me for the night I swear!!

But.. I have had this one opened while browsing through the others, and I've got to say..

That the best men I've ever met are those that didn't fit in!

Thank you for the tribute to them

Cheers!

Your time is here.  Take one last look at it, then never come back.  This part of your life is already over...
