Don’t Let the Sun Rise©1998 Genea Parker

My best friend at six, a puppy with big eyes,
Followed me everywhere, and slept with me each night.
That night I saw the accident, I saw her lying there so still.
Would she live or would she die? I could not guess His will.

Holding her in my arms, silently saying a prayer.
I begged and I pleaded, with the great Man upstairs.
Asking for more time, tears streaming from my eyes
Please Lord, I prayed, don’t let the sun rise.

The doctor told my dad, Mom would be gone by morning light.
If only it would stay dark I thought, everything will be all right.
Each breath of hers was a struggle, she gave it her very best.
I just knew my Mom would pull through, she was better than all the rest.
As her last day, turned into her last night, I knew that it was true
Desperately I watched, and all that I could do, was...

Hold her in my arms and tell her, I was thankful she’d been there.
I begged and I pleaded with the great Man upstairs.
Asking for more time, tears streaming from my eyes
Please Lord, I prayed, don’t let the sun rise.

Mom died that morning and many years passed by.
After college and starting a career, I found the love of my life.
We raised a lovely daughter, knowing there would come the day
She’d find a man of her own, and we’d have to give her away.

The night before her wedding day, I sat beside her on the bed
Saw the young woman before me, but wished she were little instead.
I held her as she fell asleep, brushed back her golden hair
Smiled to myself, kissed her cheek, and prayed a little prayer,
As I...

Held her in my arms and whispered, I was thankful for all we’d shared.
I asked Him to send His angels, to always be with her there.
Wishing for one more day with her, tears streaming from my eyes.
Please Lord, not yet I prayed, don’t let the sun rise.
