I see him calmly standing there
So confident and void of fear
Mocking me with icy stare.

Unable to escape his stare
Of confidence combined with leer
I see him calmly standing there.

Sarcastic monster! How he dare
To criticize my weak veneer
Mocking me with icy stare.

Remindful of an old nightmare
Recurrent in my early years
I see him calmly standing there.

Fiend from darkness! How he bares
My soul with evil grin so queer
Mocking me with icy stare.

I strike at him with hatred bare!
But, through the shattered cracks of mirror,
I see him calmly standing there
Mocking me with icy stare.

You make this seem so easy...it's incredible (I bought a new Thesaurus so I can look up superlatives just for YOUR poetry). I struggled for days with mine and to read yours and know you have it memorized! I'm thinking of sticking my quill into the nearest goose!

I have been pretty fascinated with well-written villanelles and I like this one a lot.  I struggle a bit to get the lines to flow the way I want and guess I need to practice more (sounds like playing the scales and chopsticks, huh).  This is good - I really enjoyed it.

thank you, Aziza. I've always been fascinated by the structure of the villanelle. Glad you enjoyed it.....here's another one I had written..

The headlines of the New York Times
In their descent from bad to worse
Will never print my favorite rhymes.

In place of them horrendous crimes
Form images both cruel and terse
The headlines of the New York Times.

With so much in our lives sublime
A paper that dwells on violence and worse
Will never print my favorite rhymes.

They're pallbearers marching along in time
After the money in your purse
The headlines of the New York Times.

So pass my book, my son, for I'm
Quite sure that paper that I curse
Will never print my favorite rhymes.

I'll save my nickels and my dimes
Invest them in a book of verse.
The headlines of the New York Times
Will never print my favorite rhymes.

You know, I am liking that a lot.

Makes me want to take an idea and give it a shot in Villanelle style.  Going into the archives is a bit like looking at old family pictures or watching old movies ... I am seeing the cast as it is now, but have the opportunity to see them in the past too.  I really appreciate how PiP has archived instead of keeping one huge section of poetry.  Every night I read a couple of pages of poems in Archive 1 and marvel at those who are here still writing and sharing - and wonder why some who were quite good are not here.  Interesting, huh.

Thank you for sharing this Villanelle with me ~ I am off to draft my thoughts.
