Once an egg is broken, it can never be replaced.
Once a word is written, it can never be erased.
Once a shoe has worn out, its usefulness has, too
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

Once a flower has wilted, its fragrance disappears.
Once a word is spoken, it will echo through the years.
Once a match has burned out, it will never flame anew
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

Funny all the time spent on half-forgotten dreams.
Funny all the energy we waste on foolish schemes.
We wouldn't strike that matchstick to watch it flame anew,
Why, then, can't we know enough
To know when love is through?

So, on we go, relentlessly, in spite of tears and pain
Trying to stop the leaves from falling
Trying to stop the rain,
But, once a heart is broken, it will always be in two,
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

Wishing there could be a way to reopen the
magic
We must press on, although I know, it certainly is tragic.
I could never love someone else the way that I loved you
You wish and I wish that our love wasn't through.
There never really is a way to relight that old flame
And we both know that if we try, it will not be the same
All good things come to an end, as a fire will die
So I speak to you these words: thank you and goodbye.

I wrote this reply right now sitting at the computer-your poems inspire me Balladeer. Hope to have one of my own posted soon.

Elizabeth...you certainly did a GREAT job just sitting there and knocking that out. It's good...and accurate. Sometimes.. goodbye and thank you..are the only things to say.

Sally.. No, I haven't. Publishers don't share your enthusiasm. I thank you for yours.

Dear Sir,
The magic you possess that enlightens all of us here, has a bountiful energy. You are an inspiration, yet even so much more then that. You need to get yourself an agent, and he will find a publisher for you. You are much to gratifying to be left unnoticed by the world.

although maybe in a rare occasion, love can be nurtered back to a flame from a flicker, but will it last? Is it real? Will it die down again at a later date? Answer this and I guarantee you will have answered most of the problems addressing alot of people today

'Deer dear heart, didn't I say you always had an outstanding talent. Utterly wonderful flow, poetry rarely gets better than this, yours does, but then it is exceptional.

First class kid, this is definitely a must as a repost, you can't expect those newbies and others to trek down here, they might be allergic to all sorts. Isn't it amazing how much treasure is lying here? And so much of it with your name stamped in gold on it too.
Take care

Balladeer,

Since I can't sleep, I went looking And I found this.. and wow. It brought tears to my eyes.  We have all been here, afraid to admit the truth.  Afraid to be alone. I'm glad I found this.

Hugs,

I'm glad Tara found this too, its perfect.  Silly publishers who have overlooked you, they ought to be fired. I loved this line because it's such a great question:

Funny all the energy we waste on foolish schemes.
We wouldn't strike that matchstick to watch it flame anew,
Why, then, can't we know enough
To know when love is through?

I don't know.  I just don't know.  Maybe cuz love does some impossible things. Sigh.

Keep up the good - I mean amazing - work

How in the heck do I always miss the good ones?

This is beautiful !! and I so agree with you.  Sometimes we just don't know when enough is enough, or when it's really through.  Goodness knows, sometimes I look back and think that I may have been asking for punishment haha

Once again, a splendid write and I am reminded how much I love and miss your writing.
