** Anonymous - wish I'd written it **

Once upon a midnight dreary, fingers cramped and vision bleary,
System manuals piled high; wasted paper on the floor,
Longing for the warmth of bedsheets, still I sat there doing spreadsheets,
Having reached the bottom line I took a floppy from the drawer.
Typing with a steady hand, I then invoked the SAVE command
But got instead a reprimand:
"Abort, Retry, Ignore"

Was this some occult illusion? Some maniacal intrusion?
These were choices Solomon never faced before.
Carefully, I weighed my options, these three seemed to be my top ones
Clearly, I must now adopt one - choose
"Abort, Retry, Ignore"

With my fingers pale and trembling, slowly toward the keyboard bending
Longing for a happy ending I hoped all would be restored.
Praying for some guarantee, finally I pressed a key
But, on the screen, what did I see?
"Abort, Retry, Ignore"

I tried to catch the chips off guard. I pressed again but twice as hard,
Luck was just not in the cards. I saw what I had seen before.
Now I typed in desperation, trying random combinations,
Still there came the incantation
"Abort, Retry, Ignore"

There I sat distraught, exhausted, by my own machine accosted!
Getting up, I turned away. I paced across the kitchen floor.
And then I saw an awful sight; a bold and blinding flash of light,
A lightning bolt that cut the night!
It shook me to the very core.
The pc screen collapsed and died. "oh, no, my database!", I cried
I thought I heard a voice reply
"You'll see your data - nevermore".

To this day I do not know the place to which our data goes.
Perhaps it goes to Heaven where the angels have it stored.
But, as for productivity, well, I fear that it goes straight to Hell
And that's the tale I have to tell - your choice:
Abort, Retry, Ignore.

My cyber love life, this reflects
in monitor's glaring light.
No words of love do I read
to give my heart delight.
I turn to Yahoo personals
seeking love in vain
Chat rooms, ICQ and such
bring nothing but distain.
I search the cyber world for him
seeking a lover sweet
but all I get for my troubles
is alt, control, delete!

Drivel (a repost)

Once upon a midnight dreary
(I had gotten off work early)
I sat me in my comfy chair
At the monitor I did stare
Hoping there to find a way
For my feelings to convey

Nothing came, nothing there
As I sit with bovine stare
Idly tapping on the keys
Thoughts active as drunken bees
Skimming along, falling off flowers
(Hmmm..I've been here several hours)

Still waiting for my wayward Muse
(I hope she paid her union dues)
Waiting for one transient shimmer
But the bulb is growing dimmer
The wax drowns out the candle flame
My flickering thoughts die the same

Scanning the words I have so written
Wondering how I was smitten
To write such banal drivel
Worse than a toddler's snivel
I reckon I'm a sado/masochist
I'm adding this to the list

Wonderful! You'll have to teach the rest of us French so we can do a 'French' challenge poem or something! Thanks.

Balladeer, eventhough this isn't one of your originals, it deserves a few more readers/replies...the line "You'll see your data - nevermore" is priceless
