I'm sure all of you have seen the plagiarism thread by sewasham. It's a real problem and this isn't the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last.

Here's one solution, make PiP's a restricted access website to the public. As in, no viewing any page on this site unless you a member who is signed in. I belong to another poetry forum and they run their website just like this. Here, go to it and see for yourself:
http://p198.ezboard.com/bsaltydreamsbook2

This is what we need. It will cut down greatly on poetry vultures.

Another idea, there is a code you can put on text or images on a website that prohibits someone from copying and pasting it. People use this code on ebay when they're selling pictures to ensure that someone won't get the picture for free by copying and pasting.

I think we all should brainstorm, I know we can come up with a solution. Because I know everyone agrees that having your work stolen is a violating experience and we all want it to end.

"Well I wish that you would cheat with someone, 'cause you're like diggin' holes in water and we know that can't be done."

Grim, I'm under the impression that PIP pays for itself by the hits it gets and the ads it displays. Restricting it would not do it any favors, I would think.

LOL. That's almost funny, Balladeer. Yesterday, the advertising in the forums made a grand total of 76 cents. Admittedly, that was an unusually bad day. We usually manage to at least break a buck.

The problem with restricting access isn't financial, but rather -- ironically -- philosophical. I'd like to think we combat plagiarism by setting a good example for the rest of the Internet. We take copyright pretty serious here, not only responding quickly to any reports of plagiarism but often actively searching when something looks suspicious. Of course, Mike already knows that since he does his share of such searches. But in spite of our stance on plagiarism, combating it is NOT our goal here.

Our goal, rather, is to share poetry. Restricting access, I suspect, wouldn't exactly be the best way to accomplish that goal.

Besides, it wouldn't help. We don't exactly card people at the door, ya know. If I really wanted to stop plagiarism cold, I'd have to restrict access to just me.

Yeah, I suppose restricted access wouldn't be good. What about my second idea about the copy and paste code? Do you think that's feasible?

Feasible, yes. In fact, I've experimented in some depth with such code for the main site and am still undecided.

Trouble is, it's incredibly easy to defeat: just turn off JavaScript. Worse, in the forums, it's not at all unusual for comments to reference the poem in part or in whole, and that's usually a copy and paste, too. Can you imagine spending any time in Critical Analysis and retyping all the poetry being analyzed?

Ron,
I suppose you have devastated Deer's plans to retire on his own website he's been developing. But it is not surprising to me that this truly is a labor of love. Seems like there ought to be an annual fee to participate. Until then, please know how appreciative I am of your blue walled home and the open door.

Darn...I was SURE the income from the site allowed you to live life in the lap of luxury, Ron...of course, 76 cents IS 76 cents!
