Ron:

I'm sure this has been discussed, but the idea came to me recently, and I thought I'd bring it up. What are the chances of a piptalk.com email service? I know you have ron@piptalk.com, and such, but I'm sure that you do not have a server/etc yourself, but are using another company's. I know having your own email system would cause need for much larger space, more moderators, and mainly there would be concern for legal issues. I can only imagene what would come up. Nonetheless, it seemed like an enjoyable idea. Maybe as a 'gift' or 'plus' for members over, say, 1000 posts, have the option of using a @piptalk.com email? Just throwing ideas around.

Titus, I don't think the server could handle so many email addresses...I know Kit and Nan have one for convenience, but I think it's not feasible to offer emails @piptalk.com to all the members. Even members with a specific status.

That's what I was thinking you'd say... but I'm curious... could advertising on the new 'side' of pip in the end help pay for a new server? The new server could thus take pressure of our current one, and take on the new load of traffic. Is that a possibility?

We could charge YOU for the number of posts you make!!

Just kidding!!!

I'm sure Ron will address this - he had to teach a class this week.

How much bandwidth would email take?

Would you need a dedicated mail server?

Would it need integral virus scanning capabilities?

Would it have an Internet interface, if so do you write it yourself or buy it in?

Would the cost outweigh the advantages?

Who pays the cost?

Who administers it?

I spent a couple of minutes on these questions, given time I could probably think of a whole bunch more and I’m sure Ron could answer them all (given time).

LoL. See? I knew there were many issues (I am a avid computer user; did I say that already? I think so.) Basically, all that means pip doesn't have the capabilities or resources, correct? I figured as much, but a man can dream.

one thing i've learned in my time here is that if Ron doesn't answer, he already has.
