And now one can hear
The swelling in the river arteries,
The dread of winter that ceases
The ripples,
And creeps the vein's flow
To a frigid standstill.
Listen to the gasp
In the porosity of soil,
The aching aging creak
Of groundwater
Sputtering to the sleeping well.
See how the branches
Hang heavy as eyelids
Over sighing banks
And sugared stones.
The fences adorn their lower extremities
In crispy ruffles of windswept leaves,
Slippered in mold.
Here the skies drape low,
Veiling the peaks in godless grey,
And the branches crop the air
In a sage chastening.
