Remembrance
(Dedicated to Laurel)

I awoke last night
thinking I felt your movements
and as my hand
traced lazily down my abdomen;
I remembered you were gone.
The flatness of my belly
suddenly felt so foreign;
and the memory of you
caused my breasts to weep
in tears of milk.
I reached to clasp the tiny box,
containing a foot print card
and a lock of your hair,
with the same hands
that only days before
shook as they touched your perfect face.
You were born in silence ~
and something inside me died.

Wow Hoot! This was very touching! I'm sorry for your loss. Something no mother wants to experience. God Bless you! (((((HUGS)))))

Whtdove...I'm sorry I didn't mention I wrote this one for my niece who carried a baby to term only to have it die 2 weeks before her due date...the baby girl, perfect in every way was named Laurel. The loss devastated her and almost destroyed her family. I'm happy to say she is doing somewhat better now.
Thank you for your comments though.

thank you for telling me Hoot! It is heart wrenching though. Nothing a mother would want to go through. My sister did the same thing with twins. She went into labor and ended up one of the twins was still born. Jaquelin, she had died 12 hours before birth.
It was a very sad day!

This happened to a friend of mine too, baby died just days before she was due to be delivered. Your niece had keepsakes, something to prove there was a Laurel. That is good. Your poem is very sensitive and well written. Good job.

BTW, there are happy stories....one of my closest friends lost a baby at 4 months, was devestated.....a week later when she went to the doctor for a follow up, they heard a heartbeat...there had been twins and they didn't know it, Today that baby is a healthy 7 year old......and a very special blessing.

I just want to thank everyone for their kind comments to this poem. I work as a RN in an Obstetrics unit, so I see the effects this type of loss has on people more often than I care to. This is one opportunity my poetry gives me to help others. I've shared this particular piece, as well as another I've written dealing with the same subject, as part of a grieving packet given to parents who have lost an infant. Sometime it helps them to realize that these feelings they are dealing with, often trying hard not to express, are very normal and they are not alone in feeling or expressing them.
Once again, thank you all.
