Was nine o'clock on Monday morn,
...When victim took the stand,
"Do you swear to tell the truth?"
...As raised her trembling hand.

"Will you to the judge relate,
...Events of fateful night?"
She told of horror, told of pain,
...As rapist sat contrite.

Questioned by two lawyers,
...Distinguished suited men,
With anguished voice and tearstained dress,
...Lived through the rape again.

"When my client left that night,
...What was his final word?"
"Bitch, would you rather live or die?"
...She said, "that's what I heard."

She raised her head, no question asked,
...did at the rapist stare,
"As I lay upon the ground,
...I said, "I do not care.""

Silence on the courtroom fell...
Silence...

Mike, this one knocked me for a loop! I sat here reading it and got goosebumps from the last line! Excellent story - well told.

Very strong piece you have here! Very well put! I can only imagine. So few words,"I really don't care." Lays quite the impact on how she felt. Tough subject, great job!

Thank you all for you comments. I was really hesitant in posting this poem because I did not want to trivialize a situation that although I was present, I could not begin to comprehend the pain involved.

Poignant piece, Mike.
Rape is not just a violation of body. but of mind and soul, also. You capture this well.

But dreams - of those who dream as I,
Aspiringly, are damned, and die:
