Winterwarm

The hills are blanketed with snow,
The wild geese have all flown south.
Whisper your warmth across my mouth.

The woods breathe deep, and hold their breath,
The creeks and streams have ceased to flow;
The wild geese have all flown south.

I know a single winter truth
The hibernating creatures know -
Whisper your warmth across my mouth.

The trees stand tall and meet their death
While rabbits huddle close below;
The wild geese have all flown south.

You are the husband of my youth,
The only comfort that I seek now -
Whisper your warmth across my mouth.

The lake is frozen hard as truth,
The fish swim deep and sleep below.
The wild geese have all flown south,
Whisper your warmth across my mouth.

Villanelle of deepwinter, brilliantly embeshed with the heartfelt warmth of the ever-cold snow and ice.

Beki,
Beautiful poem. Very nostalgic, though I've never been there. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dream, Artur and John. I have always considered this poem my very best work...villanelles being as difficult as they are to pull off successfully :-) And that line..."whisper Your Warmth across my mouth" I know I wrote but honestly, and humbly, it just doesn't get any better than that! John, I have never been there either, except for a deep winter or two in my heart...I am born and raised southern California Beach kid! Hugs to you all.....:-)

"whisper your warmth across my mouth"

What a line ... what a poem. I can see why you would consider this your best work ... I think any of us here would be proud to claim it ...

Think I'll read this one again ... thank you for sharing.

I love it - 'Tis truly a wonder vision of winter - and I dont' like being cold - the white part is OK though.....
It seems that you have lines #1 and #2 juxtaposed... a typo, no doubt - It's a nice piece of work, my friend....
