Forty!

Life begins at forty
That's what they told me
To embrace each moment
As a portal to the future

Inside such confusion
As I think of things ahead
So much of the past lies
Unresolved for me.

Trials and tribulations
Are everyone's to have
Family, friends and others
Think they know you well

There's a storm
Brewing inside of me
Logic vs. creativity is
Tugging away inside.

Stifled dreams and such
Plague my very being
There's too much unresolved
To leave it behind

Midlife crisis indeed
Some scoff at such
To search for oneself
Is a ridiculous thought

So I thought in my thirties
That is such a crock
Searching for the meaning
Of life and self within

I'm at forty now you see
And life has been strange
Driven to the very brink
Of success only to fail

Forget the past they say
Easier said than done
Forget all that shaped
The being that i am

Tomorrow a new day dawns
After a sleepless night
Left and right brain fought
For control over me.

Crisis at forty i hear
Is really world war three
A defining line in life
To move forward or not

There's no end to this
Tale I tell right now
Because at forty years
There's much left to write

I really like this one, I feel as though I'm peeking into your thoughts, witnessing the struggle you are engaging in. "Driven to the very brink of success only to fail"--that line packs a powerful punch. I can see a person working their whole life to reach their goal, just to have it taken from them. It makes it easy to understand the turmoil you have inside.

Think of your midlife crisis as a rest stop on an interstate: you get to reflect on how far you've come and look forward to the journey that still lies ahead.

I don't know where to begin here...This
poem really spoke to me and glad to find
out I'm not going crazy. I had my 40th the
first of this month and didn't even predict
the change in my head it brought on. THANK
YOU SOOO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS. It's nice
to know I'm not going through this alone.

To my dear friend Tara:

Each time I post a poem I am like a kid in the candy store finding it hard to wait for the treat of having my work read. YOu inspire me.

To moonmoon

Thank you very much. Putting my work on a board is new and scary as well as exciting. I try to be as honest as i can with my writing because it will forever be a legacy of who or what i am as a person.

Julie:

As i said in the poem when i was thirty I thought it was a crock..but now..it's truly the most undefined plateau I have ever reached.. One hand on the branch and sinking in the quicksand..I am pulling to spring forth out of the quagmire and rocket into a new and exciting future. It takes time. Too much time.

SF: I'm 42 now or is it 43..I never can remember..*g*...I think I got younger when I hit 40...sound weird?..I guess I felt the pressure was off and I could be me and me I am....wow!..I discovered a me I didn't know existed...I didn't go wild or anything but felt really comfortable with me in a way I hadn't felt before...I'm not sure I could put it into words but I felt I'd reached maturity of mind and yet nothing else has aged....I often think it;s the way you are inside that glows outside....so have hope, life at 40 can be terrific..

SF, you know that your poetry was what drew me to you in the first place. You are the first one I really opened up to with mine. I value our friendship!
