Horrible is life with it's unending pain
for the child who is born addicted to cocaine

Hooked up to machines - with tubes in his nose
he lies on the sheets in his crucifix pose

He shivers and shakes, his muscles knot tight
he suffers each day and all through the night

The linen white ladies keep sharp, watchful eyes
on the quivering infant breathing pitiful cries

But they cannot help him, no more can they do
but wait hour by hour hoping he might pull through

He struggles for life with all of his might
but his will cannot save him - he's too weak to fight

His body gives out on the next breath he takes
and his heartbeat grows fainter till no sound he makes

The pain is now lessened - ready to cease
and death finally comes with it's comforting peace

And while the innocent pays for the sins of another
back to the streets walks his cocaine mother...

Very poignant message here, Echo.
A sad and sometimes overlooked problem of society. At least here in California there have been some recent law changes to hold the mother accountable in situations like these {It should be like that everywhere}.

Chilling, indeed.

It has been here(IL.)Michael. If you are found to have drugs in your system the baby will be taken from you and you go to jail.

This was a hard subject, you did a great job with it! You brought tears to my eyes!

Trynete...This happened to my friends sister and it inspired me a lot.

ALL...I write poems to vent feelings, but this one I also wanted to get a message accross with as well. Thank you all for taking the time to read it!

Powerful poem, hauntingly intense. You said it well without resorting to melodramatic tactics. The problem is one of so many that plague newborns today...alcohol babies are nearly as handicapped. You did a very admirable job with this piece. :-)

Michael and Echo, where in California do you live?

Thank you all for your comments...
beowulf_26...I wish I could have ended the poem happier, but I dont think it would have gotten the message through, and also this is a true strory and it didn't end happy, so, well, you know. Thank you for taking the time out to read my poem.

Beki...You're right, alcohol babies are nearly as handicapped too, I have dealt with that many of times as well. As for where in Cali I live, I live in the Santa Clarita Valley, or as most people now us by, Magic Mountain. Thank you fot taking the time to read the poem.

Systematic Decay...I hate to see someone innocent pay for another as well, and that is partially why this poem was written! Thank you for taking the time to read it!

It is so sad to see people suffer, especially the innocent young children. The world can be so cruel. What is real sad is that there are many, many women and couples that would give up everything they own to have a healthy baby.Yet,they are not able to have children of their own.Instead the ones that don't need them or (want them) have them everyday. Now that is sad.I'm truly sorry for your friend.
But very nice poem,well written!!

DBeth....I believe it is terribly sad to see people suffer, especially the innocent young children as well. You're right, the world can be so cruel. So unfair in times...the majority of times. But I have high hopes and I hope that MAYBE I can do some small part by getting a message accross to other people who care and can make a difference. Thank you for taking the time to read an respond to this poem!

I went back and read this again, actually I have a few times. I love it, it is such a wonderful message! So I thought I would bring it back up to the top so others can read it cause it was getting pretty far down in the list!
