Holding Back

I will never again
give myself wholly to another
even as I lay, languishing in your arms
our bodies still damp with sweat,
naked, as the sun rises in the red morning sky
part of me will always hold back

Yes, those three words may pass my lips
like the sighs that passes over them
moments and hours before
when I cried out your name in ecstasy
and I may even mean what I say, when I say them
but there will be a part of me holding back
for to give you all of me
would be to lose a part of myself

Yes, perhaps someday
as we drink tequila on a sandy beach
in Mexico, watching the sky turn from blue
to orange beneath the setting sun
I will tell you all of this and more
and maybe I will be surprised to find
that you too are holding back

As we reach the bottom of the bottle
drinking to where only the worm remains
when everything we've wanted to say, has been said
'till we've convinced ourselves as well as each other
that we have nothing to lose by holding back
maybe, just maybe, it won't be so hard to swallow

Jenny and Dream, thank you both so very much for your kind words. I can't say that I agree so much with this philosphy as I did a few months ago when I wrote it, but then again...I'm not in that position yet either.

Especially liked the "worm in the bottle" part and the "blue to orange sky" is effective also.

good one...

Thanks for the repost. I'm glad I'm catching up on so much great work that I've missed. You all (especially you hoot) have such great talent. Don't ever stop writing. I won't stop listening.

Bewulf...what a kind thing to say, your opinion of my writing may be a bit over rated, but thank you for your support

Whtdove.....actually the worm is used a symbolizm, I never actually said they were going to swallow the worm, in fact what they need to swallow is the fact that they believe they've nothing to lose by holding back

Very original..fresh take on an old problem with many relationships. I think you explored it very well here!

Hoot:..I liked the emphasis on holding back or not...but if it's not in your nature to hold back, it's virtually impossible to do so..

Thank you Beki and Rainbow girl.....I can't say as I posess the same attitude today as I did when I wrote this, but I think in some extent, we all hold back just a little

Hi Ruth,
I just reread this one and it is way up there as one of my favorites. I also realized I never left a note of thanks for sharing this one with us all. I guess it got lost in the workday shuffle. Excellent poem. Really. Take care.
