Purgatorial Incarceration

0 posted 1999-09-07 12:30 PM

I come to a crossroad junction.
Looking to the sea, I see my way.
It is far.
No direction is easy.
All lead to eternity.

Which one should I travel?
The one I wish to walk?
Or the other, the one I should?
Am I less a man for choosing the path I desire?
Is direction really that important?

Who can say?

These are what make the decision worse than the walking.
Is my past before me yet?
Can I not escape it?
Will it haunt my memories always, a curse?
Will I ever be free?
Does true freedom exist?
Are we indeed bound by the shackles of society?
Will we walk forever in the shadow of an illusion?
Must we always conform, fit the mold?

Is there an individuality?

Or is it all a uniform structure.
Each block molded to be in its place.
Designed to meld with the general framework.
Never allowed more than little differences.
Only enough to distinguish from one to the next.

And if one breaks its mold?
Follows its own path?

Does he then threaten the whole?
Is it a gap that can be repaired?
Is he less for making a unique choice?
Will he be condemned for non-conformity?

All these and more.

Do the answers exist?
Do the questions?

Or is it all a grand illusion?
A trick of light.
A mote in the eye of a far away deity.
Again, who can say?
And if one steps forward to answer?
Will he be right?

Perhaps it is up to each to find a solution.
To form a question.
To search the clues laid out to see.
To find their own answer.

But is that even right?
How can we know?
Perhaps there is no way.
If that is so, then so be it.
I will choose my own way.

What will you do?

Life is filled with these unanswered, and unanswerable, questions.

See Balladeer, that exactly it. How can there be an unanswerable question, when it has never been asked....

Argue away Severn, you know I like it that way!!!
