Awww I love ya Balladeer, your not really mean. Kinda pushy though..haha..Toerag says so too!

It’s a nice place to visit , but I wouldn’t wanna stay.
I’ve been there and done that and threw the shirt away.
Its a little bitty town about a mile wide.
Everybody knows you, there’s no place you can hide.

They talk about Tom’s new car and Mr. Brown’s new suit.
The tree out back of Ned’s house that never bares good fruit.
They whisper about Mrs. Johnson and the man that comes to stay.
When Mr. Johnson’s out of town for those 2 weeks in May.

If you stand back and listen you’ll hear about the tale.
The time old Buddy lost a cow to a giant piece of hail.
The old women sit and gossip the old men do it too.
You can only hope and pray they aren’t talking about you.

It’s a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t wanna stay.
As soon as I could do it I moved my butt away.
Sometimes I go to visit to see if things have changed.
The biggest difference I can see the Ace Hardware’s rearranged.

They got a new big Walmart and the Tastee Cream closed down.
The newest advance in technology is the stoplight in mid town.
But I wouldn’t change a thing about the people or this place.
Its the only town to run to when I need a friendly face.

Its the one place I can go and hear.. "Hey aren’t you Wilma’s kid?"
"Yes sir, did you know her?" "Did I know her? Sure I did!"

Yes its a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t wanna stay.
As soon as I have had my fill.. big city I’m on my way.
The hustle and bustle of crowds where people just don’t care.
Where I can dream of small town life and a poem can take me there.

Well, Lucie, let me tell you, if I had anything to do with your creating and posting this poem here, then you can call me any name you want because.....it's GREAT! Some of these lines are priceless!

The newest advance in technology is the stoplightin mid-town..

The new Wal-mart and the Tastee Cream closing down....I can see! You not only described your town, you described where I grew up, too. I enjoy this poem more than anything I have seen you do. Shows how warped I am! Anyhoo....... Great poem!

I love it Lucie! Even with all the gossip, I still sometimes think I'd like to live in a small town.

You guys! Have you heard about Mrs. Johnson's "houseguest"? What about the new dress Betty wore to church? Speaking of church, Bob didn't show up Sunday and he NEVER misses a service! Think something might be wrong? Let's pay him a visit to see if he's all right.

Sorry, don't know what made me come up with these...you have inspired me, Lucie.

Sounds like a town I just moved away from in Oklahoma. Ya know...I really do miss it.

Thank you all for your support of this poem. Even though Balladeer was a meanie head and veto'd it from the community forum I am glad to know that there are so many people out there who remember what its like to grow up in a town just like this.
When I try to explain to my children they just don't visualize it. I remember having total strangers step out on their porches as the sun was going down and tell me that if I didn't get home before dark they were gonna call my mom.
But going to school with the same people from kindergarten to graduation had disadvantages, cause its really hard to get excited about going out on a date when your a senior with someone you used to call stinky in 3rd grade.

May I add kudos to all of the above.

Home towns are wonderful, full of fresh air...you can have your cities, I've been there...like a 4th of July picnic, a flash in the pan...give me the country and its side of fresh cured ham...and even with small towns, and all their gossipy folk, I'd rather be a country bumpkin, as I know a pig in a poke!

Most excellent Lucie. To my mind, one of your best. I've never lived outside of the city, however where I currently reside it has a small town feel. I've visited plenty of this country to know what's out there, but I've never lived outside of So. California. Super Kudos to you for your efforts!

This is such a awesome and wonderful poem, I have lived in a small town now for almost 18 of the 23 years of my life.
We were military for four years and travled, and oh how I longed to be home again, where I could feel safe, and where everyone knows who I am.....great job, well done
