Drifting away, a little at a time
she doesn't remember my name
or why I have come to see her
but she hugs me just the same
and asks if I know her
Yes ma'am, I know you…
you are my heart and soul
my smile, my tears
my brown eyes
all of my memories will
take the place of those you've lost
oh yes ma'am they are good ones
you made them so…
it was your laugh, and your proper
Southern ladylike ways, your
faith in God and in your husband
the way you loved us all so much
that we never, ever doubted it
it was the sugar cookies and ice
cream, fried chicken and coca-cola
in those little bottles
it was peace sitting next to you
in church on Sunday, after
you came to Sunday school to
sing "Did you ever see a Lassie"
with all of us tiny off-key moppets
it was the way we knew you were
glad to see us come to visit, and
those hugs you gave were always
the very best…the very best
I still hear your laugh…with that
little sigh that always followed it
oh how I love that sound…
yes ma'am, I know you
yes ma'am, I'm your granddaughter
yes ma'am, I love you very much

Thank you Denise. I cried writing it...she is in another state, and I miss her so much. I keep turning back time in my mind to see her again.

I hope you send this to your grandmother! It's one of the sweetest tributes I've read in some time. She will love it! I felt her gentleness in your words and knew immediately it was about someone you loved and missed!

caroline, i enjoy your owrk very much, there is so much emotion. i have been in this same situation with my grandmother, right before she passed away from cancer. i was trying so hard to tell her goodbye, and i wanted to reminise about the past and thank her for all of the memories, and it hurt so bad to know that she couldnt find them anywhere in her heart. needless to say it broke mine. very beautiful!

hehe... This one is great - I visited my 96 year old grandmother this week - She said that I looked like someone she knows - She figured it out, eventually....

Grandparents are such wonderful people...and those that have them are doubly blessed.
