While failing heart is weeping
With none to hear the cries
An infant's soul is peeping
From aged and rheumy eyes

While tired body's sleeping
Prepared to breathe its last
A young girl's soul is leaping
Through meadows of the past

While fading life is seeping
From worn-out, painful shell
A mother's soul is keeping
Her children safe and well

While ancient flesh is creeping
From day to empty day
Cold time is slowly sweeping
A woman's soul away

Sue, this brought tears to my eyes. What a sad and lovely and perceptive work. This is one of my favorites.

Oh, Sue, this is so poignantly beautiful, heartbreaking haunting and tender! I'm going to keep this one in my favorite poems file. I'll keep your name attached, though I only know the first name.
I wish I could find more of your work! I'll be on the lookout!
You're a very talented poet!

Thank you all very much. I wrote this about my mother, who is ninety-four, and her body is beginning to fail her.

A beautiful comparison of youth and age. Nicely written

Sue,
My mother in law lived to 103.
She may have more time then you think.
Wonderful poem.
