Battle-Scarred

Bold and brave and willing to fight
against any injustices life brings you
I'll not let you see the holes
in this armor, no blood from
the wounds carved by your apathy
I cleanse them with gin and cover
them with the same thin steel you
see in my eyes…you calmly
stand back and while watching me
battle for your life, you
load your gun with another round
of guilt and fire it at me…
With an aim that never misses
it tears into me yet I clench my
teeth, take the pain and remain
standing, braced for the next hit
I will be who you always wanted…
a daughter of duty, I slaughter
my dreams for yours and emerge as a
semi-crazed, battle-scarred bitch
giving orders in a backward war
while you play with your tin soldiers
oblivious to the bloodshed around you

caroline, this is very, very powerful! The phrases you use are excellent and very hard-hitting. Brilliantly done.

Thank you all...this was an unsettling piece for me, as it came from a very difficult part of my life. It is, for me, probably the most emotional poem I've ever written. Thanks for your comments.

Balladeer...love your signature...*LOL*!!!
