A great time to be coming home from prison... The month of April ushers in spring, and then summer. Those are the best months for fishing and camping.

Summertimes are always full of memories.

"I spent all last summer in a max camp doing time for receiving stolen property."

" Oh, for real? How long did you do?"

" Eighteen months."

"I heard prison is a tough place."

"You bet it is. I have seen humanity at its worst. "

"Ever see anyone get raped?"

"No. But I heard about it. You never see it. It really hardly ever happens that way. Homosexuality is pretty common though. I did see that. A coupla black guys even got a little fresh with me. I don't get down like that though. What's really dangerous is the violence. You have to be very careful to avoid fights, because everywhere you turn, there's one waiting to happen. Sooo much testosterone and so little space. It was a hot summer too."

"Looks like this one's gonna be hot. Can't wait til school is out. The Church is renting the Alabama Elks campground in Tallassee for a whole week. All of the youth are going. Brother Mike and his wife have a special testimony they will share about their relationship and marriage. It's said he waited for her for eight years! Hahaha! Imagine that!"

"... Hmmm... thats respectable... unless of course he's just a chump! Haha! "

" Ha. Yeah. I don't think I could wait eight years to be with somebody."

"... Hmmm... I don't know. I'm interested in hearing about it. Sister Terry from Weotumpka gave a testimony a coupla weeks ago. Said she kept her virginity until she was married in her early twenties. It was inspiring."

" Well... everybody I know lost their virginity by the time they were twelve or thirteen. I did."

" I lost mine at fifteen, and compared to my friends, that was late! That was ten years ago."

" So how long's it been since you... you know... did it?"

" Coupla years now."

" Two years!?"

" Yup, and I ain't really in no hurry to 'hook up'.
I studied and meditated on sexuality, marriage, and relationships alot in prison, and I've developed more sophisticated philosophies than I had as a teen..."

" Well, there's my ride. I liked having you as our teacher today. Looking forward to class tomorrow. See ya then."

" Nice to meet you Danny."

" You too Jacob. Welcome home."
At eight fifteen, all the students of Bible School of God meet in the sanctuary of Bible Church of God to have morning meditation and prayer. A healthy contrast to the typical system of operations I'm used to.

The church is a relatively small congregation of simple people. These same folk built this church twenty years ago.

My daddy, Brother Dee, just succeeded the late pastors position when she passed in July. We weren't always very close. He and the pastor both were founding members of the church. Her name was Sister Bev. Always Sister Bev, and never just Bev! A backhand across the teeth was a sure way to help me understand the respect that was due this most prominent figure in the church. She was very charismatic, and made alot of waves in the Church of God of Prophecy's churches. Ultimately, She and a group of others decided to split and form their own "church".

Sister Jay is the most prominent elder in the church now: also a charismatic woman she has held the most sway in the church heirarchy because she has the gift of prophecy, and utters the very words of God. To question her is equal to heresy, blasphemy, anathema.

A heavy measure of fear is very helpful when counseling simple minds. Unfortunately, my mind is not so simple.

It is very complex. Or at least, it seems so with me. Always doubting, always questioning, analyzing, observing, thinking, learning. My shrink says that is mentally healthy, and sane, to have such a 'scientific' mind. It's because my IQ is so high, I think. It's hard for me to embrace doctrines as unquestionable truth. This keeps me in a lot of hot water with the church leaders, though. So, is an itelligent mind a blessing or a curse? Seems like a curse among these narrow minded people. Always criticizing me for "thinking too much."

Well, the Bible is a book, right? Yes, and so much more! It's sixty six books, by like 30 different authors. It's chocked full of proverbs, parables, prophecies, poems, riddles, and wisdom! It's actually an encyclopedia. Good reading comprehension is a must if you want to mine that book for its precious truth. Understanding Hebrew and Greek languages, customs, and culture is extremely helpful when trying to interpret the messages of scripture. Oh, I could go on and on with this argument. You know, the king told the apostle Paul that "much learning had made him mad." Now Paul was an intelligent man. Just read his books.

Here's a little poem I penned for my brothers and sisters:

"Nurse your conscience on Mothers Milk.
  I'll take not the teet.

Nor could I
  even should
   I would...

Fair Bosom scorns my teeth."

My shrink helped inspire that poem. You should read his books too.

But, anyway. Prayer is an excellent way to start your day. God help us, these teens need prayer! Can we get through one day of school without getting in trouble? Can we learn something? These kids are not as sophisticated as your public school students...

I'll be subbing today. I have to teach Health to Brooke and Danny. History to Blake and Gabe, and Business Math to Rachel and Danny.

Now Rachel is a bright one. Her eyes sparkle as she thinks fast. I'm convinced she can figure out the answer to any problem in this chapter. Watch her pen go to work. She won't stop til she gets it! I'm impressed. Danny is a D and F student. I'm really impressed by him too... he needs some attention.

I see her at lunch every day. She helps her grandma serve. Her grandma is a cool woman. She has that same sparkle in her eyes sometimes, so maybe Rachel gets it from her. I think it's cute.

Rachel is always polite. So well mannered, with please, and thank you. She graciously accepts compliments and jesting, a pleasure to be around. I like her jokes. She has a dry wit, like myself.

Her Daddy Chase is a funny man. He can keep you laughing. I rode with him in a truck for four hours to camp a few years ago. We chatted all the way. I liked him ever since. He was a great friend.

She looks alot like her daddy, who is a handsome fella. She wears it well. Very feminine, and very beautiful. Sometimes I notice the resemblence, and laugh. I think that's cute too.

Today we're watching Passion of the Christ. I don't know what class this is supposed to be, but I love this movie. I'm delighted to sit next to Rachel. We have the same favorite soft drink. Mountain Dew. We split a can, and chat about the movie.

When it's over, I dismiss the class with a sincere prayer for Gods care for the students, and gratitude for His grace in my life. I'm thankful that I can be a part of this family at Bible Church of God, and I'm eager to see how things unfold for me here with these people.
