In the capitol of the country, there lived a prince, named Aldrik who was born in the same year as Rapunzel, though a couple of months earlier. He was a spoiled child who was constantly being told how handsome and intelligent he was. He was very handsome—even as a small boy—but his IQ was definitely not something to praise. At all. Because of this constant praise he grew up selfish and arrogant with an ego around the size of the sun.

Rumors began to spread of Rapunzel’s great beauty and kindness, but by the time the rumors made it to the capitol they were distorted and filled with untruths. When Prince Aldrik heard the stories they told of a terrible witch who kept the beautiful “Repugnant” locked in a tall tower and the young damsel in distress longed to be free from the witch’s evil clutches. Prince Aldrik immediately left the palace in search of the beautiful maiden so that he could rescue her and gain fame.

When he finally came to the town where “Repugnant” lived he got directions to the tower and hid in the trees near Rapunzel’s house. When he heard the “terrible witch” call to “Repugnant” he memorized her little rhyme. A few minutes after he heard the “terrible screams of pain” that in reality happened to be the screams of joy from a valiant and rather uncoordinated a tickle fight. Later, when Olinda had gone home, Prince Aldrik went to the tower and repeated the rhyme.

Rapunzel let him up and yelped when she saw a strange, though handsome boy standing in her bedroom.

“Fear not, Repugnant! I, the handsome and intelligent Prince Aldrik, am here to save you and take you away from this evil place!” he said with a pose.

Jeez! How egotistic can a guy get? thought Rapunzel sarcastically. Out loud she said “Um, my name is Rapunzel and you’re not taking me anywhere. I like it here”

“Oh I see that you’re under her spell.” Aldrik narrowed his eyes. “I didn’t want to have to do this, but I’ve got no other choice.” He took a rope from his pack and tied it to the bedpost while Rapunzel watched rather amused. Aldrik turned to her. “Here goes.” And with that he tried picking her up, but she shook him off, accidentally throwing Aldrik and herself out the window.

The two managed to grab onto the rope at the bottom and dropped the small distance to the ground. Rapunzel would have just walked back into the tower and left the prince there, but he grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back, and tied them with a small piece of rope. Prince Aldrik put Rapunzel up onto his horse and got onto the horse behind her. He dug his heels into the horse’s side and they were off.

After riding east for half of the night Aldrik stopped the horse and set up a small camp. They sat around a small fire. Rapunzel glared at the increasingly annoying and unattractive Prince Aldrik, who was attempting what he tried to call thinking. Out loud.

“Ok, so how do I break her spell?” he wondered aloud to himself.

“I already told you, I’m not under any spell.” Rapunzel said inattentively.

“No, you’re only saying that because of the spell. It’s so strong that you don’t even know anything’s wrong!” Aldrik cried.

“And you’re only saying that because you’re mentally challenged. It’s so strong that you’re oblivious to the obvious,” Rapunzel said in the same bored tone. They had had the same conversation about twenty times in the last hour. Verbatim. And frankly Rapunzel was ready to strangle the prince.

“Can I just go?” she asked. “I promise I won’t go back to the witch. I’ll go and find my real parents.” Well, that was lying through her teeth, but it’s not as if someone like the prince would know.

“No! You’re mine!” cried Prince Aldrik. “I rescued you so now you belong to me and you’re going to come to my palace and marry me.”

“What!?!” Rapunzel screamed. That was NOT what she had expected to hear. Marriage? What was this guy thinking? “Uh-uh, no way! No way on Earth. NOT happening! I wouldn’t marry you if you were the last good-looking guy on earth! If you were the last guy on earth! I wouldn’t marry you if the moon and sun and stars fell from the sky because of my refusal! I wouldn’t marry you if you beat me within an inch of my life!” Rapunzel continued to rant as her scattered brain tried to think of a way out of this quagmire.

The prince’s face grew beet red and his eyes blazed. “You will be married to me or you will be beheaded!” he shouted and grabbed Rapunzel by the shoulders. He forced her into a passionate kiss. At least, passionate on one end; the passion was not mutual. Rapunzel struggled to get free and—since her hands were tied behind her back—ended up kneeing him in the gut. After he recovered, Prince Aldrik flew into a rage.

“YOU WILL MARRY ME!” he shouted into Rapunzel’s face, spittle flying everywhere.

Rapunzel’s cornflower blue eyes widened in fear and she froze, paralyzed with fear. Finally she managed a tiny, quiet, “N-no.”

Prince Aldrik slapped Rapunzel’s face.
