Once upon a time in a small kingdom there lived a husbandman named Derek and his wife, Mara, who was soon to bear child. Their well-kept but modest house was located right next to the towering wall of a witch’s beautiful garden. This witch, Olinda, was known all over the kingdom as ruthless and unmerciful, but she was also famous for her way with plants. Her garden was the envy of every herbalist, with its green and succulent fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Several months before the baby was born, Mara was looking out the window of the bedroom on the top floor of the house and over into the witch’s garden. Her wandering gaze swept over the verdant plants and fell on a patch of rapunzel. She had a sudden craving for the plant so intense that she cried out. Derek ran to her side and Mara told him of her desire for the rapunzel. With great trepidation, he climbed over the wall into the witch’s garden and brought his wife some of the leafy greens. Just as Mara was about to take the first bite there was a swirling of black smoke and green lightning in the middle of the room. Then a young and beautiful woman appeared in the midst of the clearing smoke.

“Why have you been stealing from my garden?” questioned Olinda a peeved tone. Derek explained what had happened and begged for the forgiveness of Olinda.

A confused look spread across Olinda’s face. “You could have just asked,” she stated. “I know I have a reputation and all for being ruthless and evil, but that’s just people making stuff up.”

“Oh. Sorry, then.” said Mara, blushing.

“But, I do have one condition for the rapunzel and I’ll even give you free use of my entire garden for this. My condition is that when your wife bears her child you give the child to me and I raise her.”

Derek stood up, eyes wide. “But this is our child. Our child!” he reiterated. “You can’t expect us to just give it up without knowing when we’ll see it next.”

“Her.” said Olinda matter-of-factly. “The child will be a girl. And it’s not as if you won’t have visiting rights. Every weekend I’ll teleport her here and leave her with you so that you can spend time together.” Then her eyes grew desperate. “Please! As a witch I can’t have any children, but I want a child so badly! I’ll treat her as if she were my own daughter. She’ll have anything she wants; toys, pets, beautiful gowns. Please!”

“Honey?” Derek questioned, looking at Mara.
“I suppose. But only if you do all the things you say.” Mara nodded her consent.

Walking through the streets Olinda was frustrated. She had been all over the village she lived in and there was hardly anything there to prepare for the new baby.

To be fair, it is a pretty small village and I was the one who chose to live in it. she rationalized to herself. It wasn’t the village’s fault, but that didn’t stop her from being annoyed at having to leave and go to a town that was bigger. This particular town was located closer to the capitol so it was an ideal time to pick up on gossip.
“Did you hear?” said a plump, but pretty woman with frizzy blond hair, who was tending a vending stall. “The queen just had her child. It’s a boy! We have a new prince and from what I’ve heard he’s as cute as can be!”

“No I hadn’t heard. That’s wonderful news.” Olinda said to the woman as she bagged the plush blanket that would go in her daughter’s cradle. Truthfully she couldn’t care less. Olinda thought that all princes turned out to be spoiled, selfish, arrogant little gremlins no matter how handsome they were. Hmm, thought Olinda as she walked down the cobblestone streets. 'Boys… Oh no! What am I going to do when the baby turns that age? She’ll start liking boys and will want my advice and… I have no idea what to do!'

Just then she spotted a small bookshop displaying a book.

Teenage Girls: Dealing with the Romantic Whims of Your Daughter.

Olinda made an emergency stop into that store.

When the baby girl was born the three met and decided on a name that they saw as fitting under the circumstances; Rapunzel. Rapunzel was taken to the witch’s house and Olinda kept her word. She gave the little girl everything she could desire as she grew up and even sent her to a wonderful school with other children where she worked hard to learn. She had to struggle at times to keep up with other children in certain subjects but she did her best. Olinda and Rapunzel’s parents became great friends as they raised the little girl and soon began raising a new baby boy as well.
Rapunzel saw her parents every weekend and grew close to her younger brother. Mara, Derek, Olinda and Rapunzel spent every holiday together baking cookies, singing songs, and making each other laugh.

Rapunzel’s hair came to be the envy of all the other little girls in the village. It was long, golden and luscious as the sun itself. Rapunzel never wanted it cut and neither did Olinda, so they kept it long. When she grew older Rapunzel blossomed into a beautiful young woman who was kind and gentle, with a bit of a wild streak at times.

As Rapunzel grew up she grew to be fiercely independent as well as beautiful. At Rapunzel’s request, Olinda had a very tall tower built out in the woods. It had a secret entrance that was bewitched so that Rapunzel and no one else could go in and out. Not even Olinda could go through the magic door. Instead she would call up to the only window in the tower, “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your long hair, that I may climb the golden stair.” And Rapunzel would let down her beautiful hair so that Olinda could climb it. The two were best friends and could tell each other anything.
