I used to babysit him when I was thirteen and he though four was still a frisky pup, a shining black lab with a tail wag that knocked it out of the park in making you feel loved. He welcomed you into his heart with a timber wolf moon song - open mouth O vowel sounds that ranged in register from barely audible tones of loneliness to the piercing ecstacy of touch. Together we romped through dark woods, the night between our separate worlds of abandonment, solitude and our day’s brief blaze of love. He moved away as best friends often seem to do. Two months later his owners sent a card with a note that said they thought I’d want to know they had to put Mike down. He couldn’t keep his down his food and the Vet said the surgery would cost far more than they were willing to spend on a dog that did nothing but up chuck while they were at work and whimper in his sleep after the sun went down.

As a former dog owner, I could feel your appreciation for Mike through your words. Sad that his "owners" didn't feel the same.

Nicely done.

Humm.  Well the owners had better hope that they aren't at the mercy of hands as tender as their's when they start to up-chuck and whimper at night.

Fortunately there are people in the world who will go out of their way to comfort others of whatever species when they are sick or dying.  I had that lesson brought home to me with force just recently while watching from afar the actions of a very good friend.

Hey Jennifer:
That was sad.  I liked the imagery of the playing out in the woods with the dog.

Life's short.  Think hard!

This hits me as hard as the classified ads that go like this:

Free to good home.  10yo dog. Good with kids.  Loves cats.  Owners moving.

Can't they take this friend with them?

Good writing, Jennifer.
