My Eyes

The ponies were well behaved, which was a relief because he had started his afternoon trimming the feet of fifteen meat goats and one Paso Fino.  As I drove the blacksmith back to his home he fumbled and stuttered through an invitation for me to attend a meeting that night at his parent’s house.  The latest pyramid scheme to sweep through the Amish community.  They are so vulnerable to quackery and snake oil because they have so much faith and never demand scientific evidence.   I agreed because a horsewoman has to treat their blacksmith well if they want to get good service, and because an evening at their home never disappoints.

Medicinal Chocolate, it does so much good we can’t even list all the things it will do, and the worst it can do is nothing but taste delicious… the couple from Ohio told us.  The room was full of lost causes, we could just as well be at the faith healers.  One woman with a walker had both legs crushed between two cars when she was hit.  Her skin would not cover the bone she explained to the man as I tried to not stare at the white plastic and velcro brace that hid her horror.  She can still feel and move her toes which is why the doctors let her keep the legs, but they are losing hope.  Later the man entertained the children who don’t watch TV or play video games with the most amazing bird calls.  He could mimic any animal so convincingly. When he barked like a toy dog, the little Yorkie who had not yet showed it’s face, came charging into the middle of the room looking for the cute intruder.

The wife excused herself to the kitchen to do an iridology reading on one of the other guests and the husband explained to us that in Russia and Germany iridology was a science of reading the marks of the iris.  He said that last week she told a man that he’d been poisoned at five, which was confirmed when he recounted a negligent babysitter and a medicine cabinet story.

I sat politely, having been already singled out jokingly as the only healthy one there.  My curiosity burning inside me.  One group had to hurry away because there were no headlights on the pickup truck they were riding in.  Night was falling.  I finally ventured into the kitchen illuminated by a single warm kerosene lantern and the last falling blue twilight coming in the windows, to ask if I might also have a reading.  The three sisters dressed in matching blue shifted in their wheelchairs and smiled happily that I was participating in the quackery.  Their bonneted heads nodded approval with stiff necks and without words.

The wife sat me down on a stool and held up a thick magnifying lens in front of my eye,  She shined a flashlight behind it and then, faster than I would imagine, she stated with confidence, “Beginning around 35 you will have digestive trouble.” And then with humility she asked, not knowing if she was telling the future or the past, “Are you 35?”

The past.  All Doctor patient confidentially be damned she discussed how I might care for my genetically weak digestive system in the oversized barren kitchen set up to can thousands of quarts of homegrown vegetables.  What else could she see there with her lens?  What other tales are written in the specks and flecks of my eyes?  What things would this woman never speak of  in front of the sisters locked in wheelchairs and a community based on marriage? …The sisters, who annoy the young folks by continuing to attend the singles mixer events stubbornly refusing to embrace the concept of old maid.
