Listening to every heart

The bed shakes slightly. Dark shadows wake with me, forging mental images of a dream not yet gone to cling to me like my own silk nightgown, warm and comforting, issuing forth a sense to call back what had passed before my eyelids in dream only moments before. I close my eyes to recapture some reflection, hoping, praying it will come again.

There was lightness and laughter, and you had returned as father, needing to make your own clean sweep from long poles to match up with whiskery brooms, asking over and over, “is this one large enough” and indeed, it was, far larger than any garage or utility broom I might ever imagine, as if you required one wide enough to sweep the skies of dark clouds and rid them of hail stones waiting to fall, or more. You would not share what it was that needed to be swept away, and my curiosity waxed.

We rambled down the aisles, checking pole lengths for weight and heft, strength notwithstanding. I wondered at your need of such a wide sweep, but you just smiled, that silent, ever-present grin knowledgeable of some secret, allowing for some on-coming wisdom as if it were on a covert, “need to know,” basis. It seems right that you left me with some patience, and that I was not an inexcusable child with a feral curiosity. You knew I would persist in a quiet, unrelenting manner to analyze whatever message you might leave me.

As you turned down another aisle, a hand touched my shoulder. I turn to see into my mother’s eyes that glinting green sparkle that wore her laughter, for she, too, knows some secret yet undeclared, and she nods, as if approving my knowledge that in time, I shall understand the heavier things left unspoken. She moves down other aisles with me as we listen to your whistling, that tone which always left shivers along our arms, so beautiful your touch of tongue to teeth and lip, emitting birdsong sounds, creating smiles for unseen souls.

In tacit understanding, I extracted my wallet to pay for purchases not yet brought to the checkout counter – this was apparently my gift to you. Then, twenty and fifty dollar bills poured forth from my purse as if in an exercise of extravagance; some sense of “not enough” but enough to begin to give back to you the life you gave to me. You needed this broom, for reasons known only to you. We joined together, the three of us, at the counter, I paid the bill, never mind the cost; and in love you and mother left me, to figure out the rest of my life, alone.

A beautiful dream of ones long loved and of lessons learned.
