After you left I packed up the remnants, all the leftovers from twenty-two years of marital bliss your lawyer forgot to list as yours in the settlement I signed without reading tear blinded - the vacuumless Hoover still filled with dust mites and dog hair, the recliner that didn’t, our queen size bed that shrunk and grew sleepless in your absence and a collection of bric-a-brac cracked and chipped like dust bin wedding china.  Crated and barreled, I moved the remains of our days into the hollowed out rooms of a smoking permitted no lease for losers apartment.  I painted the walls shadow grey and the curtainless windows with two coats of a shade labeled permafrost.  Beside the recliner that still doesn’t, I placed a second hand end table and on it laid my three cigarettes for the day and a large tray that will never hold all the ashes.
