Back Yard Views
By Larry Chadwick
For Martie

It reminds me a lot of when I was five years old. My dad got a new job out of state and moved ahead of the rest of the family. He had been gone a month when a letter came in the mail. I remember hanging on ever word my mom read. It was as if I could hear the excitement in his own voice. After four weeks in our new home he experienced the biggest shock of his young life. He walked out the door at 6:00 a.m. in the morning to go to work and was virtually slapped in the face by the biggest thing he had ever seen. Right there in our new back yard was a mammoth volcano. The ever snow capped Mount Rainier.

Our mortality is much like that. We go along living our life taking so much for granted. And then suddenly without any warning we are confronted by a heart attack or a brain tumor. Unexpectedly we find ourselves reflecting our experience in fine detail. There you are in the back yard of your own life with a view you have never seen before. With any luck at all it is a beautiful sight.

With any luck, you'll have the attitude "Well God must have put the volcano in my yard for a reason, so I'll climb it and admire the view from the top. Good job.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Short, but very much to the point.  I like this one.

Ruthie,
Thank you dear lady.

Kethry,
My friend you have experienced life. And I like how you think.

Nanners,
Thanks. Yeah, I only run on incessantly when face-to-face.

I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

This really strikes a chord.  I think there are mountains in all of our backyards.  I think we can only hope they don't have the propensity to explode.  But, even if they do, sometimes the power of it can change lives for the better.  Challenges in life sure can make us stronger.  Thanks Larry.

You know, reading this reminds me of this morning when I was driving to work and I heard a report on the radio about someone who had been paralyzed by a drunk driver.  That freaked me out.  There I was just minding my own business and anyone around me could have been drunk and could have been the one to deal me the fatal blow.  Or maybe that person just doesn't exist...

Anyway, this was a good piece.  I like the fact that you bring us the shock first and then get into what it is that's shocking -- the volcano.  I thought the shock would just be something like getting used to the new job, being laid off after a stint of only a few weeks, etc...

Good writing.

Clang,
Thanks for you kind response. It seems to be too true.

fractal007,
Thank you kind sir. Truth is I only write from experience as fiction ain't my thing. Glad you liked it.
