Another “Inspire Me” prose. This time the line is from Sunshine (thank you very much).  This one worked better, I had to let it sit around in my head for a couple of weeks, but the line stayed with me until I finally just sat down and wrote. The beginning was a bit shaky for me but once I silenced my internal editor and started writing, it started to flow not too badly. I had absolutely NO idea where this one was going to go until it was done.

After the fog dispersed, he found himself surrounded by
the largest natural meadow he had ever seen.  He was quite obviously lost but ignored the fact as he gazed around himself.  He could hear birds singing from somewhere in the long grasses and shielded his eyes from the sun with his hand.  The sky was a more vivid blue than he’d seen anywhere before and the lush knee-high grass danced in the slight breeze that had picked up.  In the distance he could make out moving shapes along the tree line.  Too small to be moose, too solid to be deer; he figured it was a small herd of feral horses.  He knew the general location of where he was and had been previously aware that the feral equines existed in these parts.  As for his exact location, he lamented the fact that the stories he had been told about this area were devoid of any mention of this place.

If he had been a superstitious man he might have thought he had stumbled into Faerie Country.  He was not, however, superstitious.  He watched as the horses stopped at one end of the tree line and began to graze.  He may not have been a superstitious man, but he was a horseman; though he felt no compulsion to try and get any closer to them, he pulled out his binoculars and watched them eat for a while.  They were unlike any feral horse he had ever seen; their manes and tails were full and beautiful and their coats were shiny and healthy.  The stallion was a beautiful blood bay with a fine head and powerful hindquarters and his herd was of similar quality.

After a while he turned his attention to the rest of the landscape and was again surprised by the beauty of the place.  There were birds and insects everywhere.  Had he been a religious man, which he wasn’t, he would have thought this place was a segment of Eden left open to the occasional human to stumble into after being lost in a dense fog.  As it was he felt an incredible sense of peace that not even the looming sunset could disperse.

It was, however, time to think about finding his way home; the sun was casting long shadows now, as it sunk lower into the horizon.  He turned around to retrace his steps as the sun caused the sky to catch fire in a brilliant display of reds and yellows and oranges.  As he reached the trees he turned for one last look in time to see a flock of birds rise from the grasses and the herd of horses start galloping back the way they had come.

In all his remaining years he would never forget that sight; as the fog started to descend once again he felt a part of him gallop with the horses and he knew that he would never be the same, never as complete as he had felt on the day he became lost in the fog and wandered into a meadow that was beyond the memory of even legend.

Some fog...some horses, sun, sky and fire...

seems to me you've incorporated "us" quite well!

An enjoyable read, little one!  I enjoyed it very much!

Rhonda,
How I reveled in this write. I absolutely love nature and I am religious and this touched me. Short, but very sweet. Thank you.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I really liked reading this piece.  I don't usually delve into prose as I don't usually understand it.  But as I read your prose, it reminded me of the animated movie called Spirit.  If you like horses, you've likely seen it.  If not, it's about a horse that refuses to be captured, refuses to be tamed regardless of what he is put through.  I beleive it is a Disney movie.  If you have never seen it, I think you'd love it.
I loved this poem because I felt as though the old man was watching Spirit and is herd of horses and it brought wonderful memories for me.

Sincerely,
