Confessions of Age
By Larry Chadwick

I confess to an aging sensitivity that tends towards goose bumps and tears. As a result I am left vulnerable to chic flicks, greeting cards, love notes, sunsets and songs. There was a time when I thought it was genetic. But as I observe my older friends it has become plain to me that it is about age. A retired pastor friend will not preach any more because he says he is too likely to cry. Last weekend I offered a pastoral prayer in church that I had written the night before. Nobody was more surprised than I was when I choked up towards the end. Unlike others who share my weakness, I feel no shame.

Chic flicks only move me when the ensemble works well together and the story line is strong. One bad actor can ruin it all. Invest a little time and even someone else can express quite well what you feel personally in a greeting card. Yet many greeting cards can be incredibly lame. Love notes when from the heart in a vulnerable manner are amazing. But write one insincerely and even a lifetime single person can spot it. It is hard to find a bad sunset even behind a nuclear power plant. But then again you cannot go wrong with God.

My taste in music seems to have altered as much with age as has my sensitivity. Never have I liked classical music. But now there is a lot of other music I do not much care for either. On the other hand goose bumps and tears are much more frequent even for the smaller selection of music I enjoy. As an amateur musician I have gained a huge amount of respect for the professionals who move me. But choose not to harmonize and no amount of editing makes it passable.

Life seems to be a lot like chic flicks, greeting cards, love notes, sunsets and songs. Even when it is not fair, it is what you make of it. And it certainly is more pleasant when you make an effort to harmonize. And on a really good day I find goose bumps and occasionally the tears of appreciation flow.

Larry, I have always been like that and even more so now...although I try not to let anyone see me that way. Sometimes though I  am like a dam and burst...

I buy cards that I see that I want for others even before needed...just because they touch me. I was left with  many for my Dad and Sister who both are gone now...and since I have no other Dad and no other sister..they will remain in my desk...where every now and then I pull them out and read them.

And movies? well...or tv...I keep kleenex in every room.

hugs
M

I really enjoy your writing Larry. You have a 'Dave Barry' (compliment!) quality about you. I think you should write a column for a newspaper - you should submit your work!!

Larry

I know I am a chic...but I understand what you are saying here....because I am the same way.  I enjoyed reading this expression of your heart very much....and Sharon is right!

You are such a gentle soul Larry. Every time I read you, I see another aspect of you, and I confess, you are very easy to love.

Then please hear my confession,
but better yet, pass the Kleenex...

I needed this...today.

Maureen,
Yes I have that same collection of cards for my daughter, dad and grandma. I know exactly how that feels. I always knew you have a tender heart.

Sharon,
Wouldn't that be fun. To actually get paid for writing. Thank you for such nice compliments. Where will I find Dave Barry's writing?

Martie,
Too funny! How in the world could I miss that? Hard to get published when you can't even spell. LOL And thank you so much for your kindness.

Awww Karen,
You are such a dear friend. Thank you for always being so supportive and loving.

Karilea,
I'll bring an extra box! I'm glad to bless your day. Thank you dear lady.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Larry, for some Dave Barry input, scroll down on this link and click on any of the several past articles...

then subscribe to the Miami Herald.  We get him in our local column about once a week.

Larry,

You nailed it again!  The title tells it all.  Never thought I'd get all "bentimental" over the things I do as I appreciate in age.

I just love the way your thoughts flow freely from head to pen!

Karilea,
Sorry for being so delinquent. I don't know what frame of mind I was in the day you posted this. But for reasons I can't defend I was unwilling to subscribe that day based on their request of info. LOL So I still haven't read his work. But I will, I promise. And thank you as usual.

Misc...
Well dear lady you are a faithful reader for which I'll always be grateful. Bless you and your kindness.

How true! I find I’m a PBS lover in an MTV world.  Oldies are goodies and a new expression drives me out of my mind.  I can only image what the older generation felt when I was young.  Now I enjoy the songs my dad use to listen to with enjoyment.  The song he verse he related to was, “My boy was just like me.” Twenty years has passed since his death, and in many ways, “His boy is like him.” We all seem to get more refined as the sentiments settle to the bottom of our bones in our golden years and the circle comes back to where it began.  Where the sons in a cradle borrow the car keys and you wonder if you will see them soon.  Knowing you love them as much as your dad loved you.  Apparent that loving them is all you can do, under any mood.  In the end if they end up like you.  You can’t be any prouder.

I'm glad you sent me a map to this... you know I tend to forget there's more than one forum. LOL

And look what I've been missing... this is great!!! I especially love the ending, my friend... I wonder if we have to pass through certain stages before we're aged enough to welcome those tears of appreciation? *S*

Ruthie,
You're welcome and also probably right, as usual. And thanks. This is actually my favorite forum though there isn't much traffic.

Larry,
when a man can cry and be honest about it I know all's right with the world. Thank you for sharing, a sensitive man is hard to find and even harder to know. Thanks for opening the zipper just a bit.
Cheers
