Vacation USA

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of America?
Disney World? Fat people? Questionable presidents? The White House? Stars and Stripes? Fast food? Hollywood? Cowboys?
America is responsible for a lot.

It’s not my place to judge how good or bad any one aspect of the “Mother of the Free” happens to be; however, there has to be something gone awry if American people who go abroad on holiday feel the need to adopt a Canadian disguise.

I feel it is a question of perspective, like so many other things. Everything is subjective, we all bring our prejudices to our experiences, whether we notice it or not.

My ideal vacation USA would be going round all my American friends’ places and visiting them. Foreign exchange students at my university, fellow teaching assistants here, maybe even a couple of Pipsters; people I have enjoyed getting to know.

We need to look beyond the labels and embrace individuality, be it of a person or a country. There is more to America than fast food and strange accents, but as long we let it rot in the cellars of categorization and oblivion, it will remain hidden to us.

Naturally, Americans could also apply this to us minions who make up the rest of the world ;-) Vacation anywhere should be about being open to discovery and celebrating the quirks that each place brings to the global community, making it the rich, diverse place that it is.

Lizzie,
That's a cool suggestion. If you hook up with the people of a country you get a more accurate perception of their country too. I know it's a theory. But I like. Nice write.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I'm from New Zealand so when I think of America many strong images come to mind. Statue of Liberty is a first most definately, and the accents, plus several other's that you have already mentioned. So Vacation Usa, would be the typical tourist spots and places with alot of sun, same for anywhere. Little NZ bounces off everything from America, food, drinks, movies. Now I'm lost...where was I heading? Ah well. Well written and sweet, gtg read the rest of these assignments.

You just got to see me through another day
My body's achin' and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
