Arriving way too early for the opening of the museums and art galleries I have found a spot to sit, sip coffee, and watch the people go by the window of the coffee shop. Mostly my eye is caught by the pretty girls, but I am also noticing others. Style is mainly the venue of the twenty to thirty-something females, or at least the ones not too fat.  Some of the heavier ladies are trying very hard to maintain that fashion sense with very "with it" footwear, but their high heels seem to cry out under the strain of the bulk.  Most people are in comfortable footwear and  some probably have a second pair of shoes with them.  A number carry or drag little wheeled baggage, both men and women.  More than a few are approaching the pack mule status with backpacks, shoulder bags, and briefcases ( the ladies might add a large purse also). There is quite a variety to view going by the window.

Out and walking the mall area, the day is one of gray clouds filling the sky and the feeling that any moment the rain could come pouring down.  I like the mood it sets.  There should be a slight solemn feel when viewing fine art.  The wind is barely stirring, but when it does it tries to remind that it is the end of November.  There are not many people on the mall except the people crossing from the Metro station to the government buildings and the rare jogger.  D.C. Attempts to be a clean and pleasant city and mostly it is successful.  You have to look around the corners and in the lesser used stairwells to see the piles of trash.  The homeless hide better than in most other cities because otherwise they are quickly moved off from the tourists areas.
The arrival of a school bus full of elementary children shatters the mood for a moment or two, but the adults move them quickly towards the administration building.  The castle, administration building, opens a bit earlier than the galleries.  Just as the sound subsides another bus load arrives and pass just as quickly.  The mall is starting to take on the tourists feeling now and it is visibly filling.  The big door are slide back and it is time for seeing Art.

This museum, besides having the American artist Whistler housed there, now has oriental art.  Japanese, Korean, Chinese, India, and Persian art fills the galleries.
In the gallery of Chinese art the are scenes of the everyday life of the common people.  One of the things there was an ornately painted fan with a few lines of Wang Wei which went with the painting.  Now Wang Wei just happens to be one of my favorite poets so I sat on a bench facing it and mused.  With words drifting through my old brain cells.

I did see the rest of that museum before going off to do what it was that brought me down to the nations capital.  But art will always etch my mind and I believe that is it’s purpose.  What a loss it would be to not have such treasures.

"Art will always etch my mind and I believe that is it’s purpose." Like art, literature embeds one's mind to share the vision of those who created it.

Couldn't agree with you more.  Art is everywhere, but it's mindboggling to be in the same gallery where so many have masterfully documented their expression and creativity with their brush (or other tools and media).

You make me envious!  This is good motivation to take the family to the local!
Thanks.

Proffesor,
Took a while for me to realize the fine art the weather was setting the mood for was not pretty women! I enjoyed the read. I love history and did a quick three day business trip to D.C. and only "saw" the buildings. Now I really want to visit...

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
