Autumn was among us, the leaves had just begun their journey of the changing season.  From green to yellow and orange to red and then falling to the ground below.  The air was clean and smelled of rain and punkin pie.
My house was the same, blue with white trim and a white fence incasing my mother's delicate garden.  Oh, how she loved her garden.  The stone steps that lead to our door had colorful maple leave strewed about. Inside the aroma of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, drew me up the stair and into the kitchen.
It was unusual for my house to be so quiet at this time of day.  My brothers were arguing quietly downstairs over the remote control and my mother was in the utility room folding laundry when the broadcast interrupted the broadcasting on the television.  At first the sounds from the emergency alert system didn't have an affect on me, but when I read that this was not a test my thoughts changed.
The broadcast alert caused an uproar in our household, we were all scrambling to lock the doors and secure the windows.  An escaped convict who was on death row for being a serial killer was in our neighborhood.  We had to get everyone together and try to escape to the car and get out of the neighborhood.
By now, he was in our backyard. I watched him from my bedroom window, he had on an ugly yellow jumpsuit with numbers across his chest.  He had a shaggy haircut and a toothy goulish grin, he made my skin crawl with fright.
Was he harmful? Should we try to escape to the suburban in the driveway?  I was still in my pajamas. My mom had my brothers 20 and 14 escape out the front door and get help by taking the suburban leaving my mother and I in the house alone, with an unlocked front door.
My mom let me go into my bedroom to change my clothes, I had a door leading from the hallway to my bedroom and another door at a 90 degree angle on the wall adjacent to it that went to the bathroom.  I was scared so I had my mother stand between the doors and stand guard.
I turned and put my shirt over my head and once my eyes were uncovered I was horrified, my scream came out as a mousy sweak and I almost fainted.  There in front of my under my bed with my mattresses lifted up and his head between the wood bars that hold my box spring up was the devilish quirky murder who just stayed still giggling at me.
My mother and I turned and ran to the garage got into our other car and drove to the police headquarters.
