Where shall the first ramble begin?  In the country, of course.    I love the mud! I remember taking off my shoes and hitting every puddle possible down a thousand foot lane.  Splashing was fun, but  getting your clothes wet?  No, there was an art to mud.  You had to do it  with the proper attire-clean shorts and  a white top.  Part of the art was to see how long you could stay out there with your toes engulfed in the cool until somebody caught onto the fact that you were missing and up to nooo good!

To practice this art well, one has to be able to find just the right media and texture.  There are several types of mud:  (1)  the highly diluted type (too drippy-no good),  (2) the thick kind where you can stuck.  This is the kind you find down on the banks of creeks. (3) puddin' mud, my favorite.

This year I learned, unfortunately, that the second type can also be found in barnyards that haven’t been cleaned frequently!  We usually clean our barnyard with a Kabota every year, but for some reason, it didn’t get cleaned this year.  To top that, it has rained a lot in Ohio so we didn't clean it this Spring.  I didn’t realize the “depth” of the situation until I carefully walked into the barnyard  with my Birkenstocks.  I would have changed into the farm boots, but it’s such a hassle—besides, I know the art of finding the “solid” places on which to walk--you step where the grass or a clump of hay is…  I never get my feet dirty in the barnyard!   Apparently, somebody did some moving around of hay or something because I landed in a mudhole up to my thigh!   The problem was there wasn’t anything to hold on to to get myself out!  Now if that isn’t being buried in [edit], I don’t know what is.  Being the resourceful person that I am, I tried using my hands as leverage in the area around me.  Then, my arms were covered in  cattle furnishings!   Thank goodness my husband was there to bail me out and to crawl on his knees to rescue my treasured Birkenstock!   It hosed down nicely, and so did I!)   Nope,  that’s not the kind of mud that’s fun  (although, I must say, it does have texture!  Not a good one,  but it does have a unique texture and odour of its own!)

The third type of mud is the best.  I call it puddin’ mud.   If you  want to get technical, there are two types of puddin’ mud.  The instant puddin’ mud like Mom makes with cold milk or the type like homemade chocolate pudding that comes right off the stove.   Personal preference?  Some days I like it really warm, oozing right between my big toe and index toe.  It’s almost as good as slow  “bleep” (strike that, I want to keep it clean here).  What I like about that type is that the sun bathes down upon your back and shoulders as you dissolve into a world of  warm exploration...  Whoa, Nelly. No sensual stuff, do you hear?

One can’t discount the affects of the cooler mud, though.   I remember slipping each foot delicately into cool mud, lifting it, then painting my other foot in symmetry.  (And you wondered how they came up with Earth shoes?  I was there…)  It was so cooling, so relaxing...

Gee, I rambled a whole page on mud. (Or rather, I put mud on a whole page!)  Perhaps, in my next life I’ll come back as a Pacifist mudwrestler or a dirty novelist.

I must believe your No Good is rather mild
Even if the fragrance was not.

The Score now stands as
Mud ( and mud-like substances )   1
You well that doesn’t really matter
The streak of mudless journeys is over
Hose her down and reset the counter.

You wouldn’t have been watching “I Love Lucy” reruns again,
Have you?

And if do take up the sport,
Please let us know.

I'll be back, probably next week.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Professor,

I know.  It's the pits!  I just had to write something stupid.  I succeeded!  No
"I Love Lucy" reruns, I'm afraid.

Larry,

If you haven't read this, you really shouldn't (it's really bad!) Instead scroll down to the bottom of titles or last page to read Sadelite's "My Hero on Memorial Day."  I was just playing around here, wasting time.  The writing is much better there, but it's a kleenex piece.   I'm sure you understand those.  Thanks for stopping by.

Sadelite,
I've hung around after work and can't leave without paying my promised visit. I will get to that other piece, though(it's in my Outlook tasks).

This is a fun piece to read. No apologies required. And it reminds me of my barnyard experience growing up in Washington. By the way, I know mud pretty well myself. I slipped into the in-ground honey pot when I was nine. Uncle Bob wouldn't let me anywhere near the house. They took me into the milking parlor and hosed me down like a cow! I was humiliated. Though from this many years away it cracks me up it wasn't funny at the time. As a non-swimmer I didn't think much of the thought of drowning in that stuff. Thanks for the memories.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Larry,
I'm glad you this brought back memories and that you are alive to tell me of them!  Ooooo, to fall in the honey pot?  What an awful experience, and to be taken to the parlor to be hosed down like a cow?   I can well imagine.   I used to date a diary farmer and can well imagine the setting!  Too funny, but I'm sure it wasn't at the time!

Zin,
Of all the silly writing to surface, it had to be mud!  Oh, what one will find to write about when desperate!   Glad you enjoyed...

This is cute, and I'm loathe to nit-pick at other's work, but I did find some subject/verb disagreements, but I don't want to scrooge over such fun.

And fun is what you managed to convey, and my own offerings are so labored of late that I would hate for you to take that to heart and lose the much evident joy that you capture.

It's enough that you brought me there, and I could see, as well as feel the child-like abandon.

I did enjoy this lady.

And now? How about another bubble bath?

love ya lady

serenity,
I'm glad, but a little embarrassed you found this writing.  You wouldn't have believed the frame of mind I was in when I wrote it.  DrunK?  Well, maybe...  It was a time I was at one of lowest ebbs, if not the lowest, in my life.  Heck, and when I wrote about real life manure, the  _ _ i t was edited!  Dung-gone it!   I mean dog-gone it!   (But, truly, I appreciate what the moderators do to keep this a nice place!)

Yes, you're right...  I must have switched my time reference through inconsistent verb tense at least thirty times!  I appreciate that you said something.  I'll keep a closer eye on it, but no guarantee I won't do a little flash forward and backward now and then!  I find it's fun try it.

  Thanks again.

Sadie?

The only reason I noticed is because I have the same problem!

You?  You have the trouble with verbs?  Surely you gest!  Or, is that why in poetry you minimize?  Oh, you are truly a great writer with or without verbs!

And bubble bath?  Perhaps, it's time to "Bath Away the Day" again!   (I can't believe you remember that poem!)  Been really frustrated lately...  Passionately, I want to write prose, but nothing will come out.  Ever so often, the arts just dig at me, screaming to let creativity out.  This is one of those times again.

As far as your prose is concerned, it's obvious you have the knack!  Loved the fish story--I could picture being there.  Keep playing around with the prose, Serenity.  I look forward to reading a hardback of yours someday.

   Thanks for writing back.

OMG this is cute. I thought my friends and I that I grew up with were the only ones that loved the mud. The mud I liked the most was the type (i think its #3) that was thick. Making mud pies and having the little girl that was the biggest brat eat it. We told her she had to eat it if she wanted to be in our club. haha

The one thing that is great next to mud is the clay mud you find near creeks. I was told it was "indian clay" and that indians used it to wash themselves.

I miss them days......

I thought the write was cute....but then what do I know.

Great write.
