When we entered ninth grade, all of us were quite nervous when we came to know who our class-teacher was. He  was our thirty something math teacher who took great pleasure in making fun of us, poor students. Actually his jokes were quite funny provided they were not directed at you.

But within a few weeks we realized that we didn’t have to worry much because it seemed that he had put his heart, soul and mind in making life ,specially math class, miserable for one poor chap, thankfully sparing all us others.

This poor chap’s name was Ankit and he was a  cry baby. To top that,he used to stammer at times and a lot of us used to make fun of him, calling him a coward.

So when our dear teacher started  making the class laugh at Ankit’s expense with his “you joker” remarks,it was kind of unfair. His jokes made it kind of easier for others to tease him even more, now they had one more name to tease him with.

The year continued and so did his jokes.Sometimes even if he answered correctly, sir would look at him sternly and ask "are you sure?".This would make him nervous and then again he would be made fun of.

Well,as it had to happen, the whole class now started teasing him a lot and things got even worse for him.

With so much against him,a lot of anger must have built up inside him that had to come out and boy did it!

It was a normal math period and Sir was checking our uniforms to see whether they were properly ironed. We are supposed to wear brown shirts everyday except Wednesday when we wear white ones.

Now it so happened that poor Ankit was wearing the wrong white shirt instead of the brown one. And that too crushed. Sir just needed an excuse. He caught hold of his shirt and had just begun saying something when Ankit started crying. Well that was normal, wasn’t it cause that is what crybabies are supposed to do. But what crybabies are not supposed to do is what he did next.

In between sobs he told sir ,right on his face, how he always found fault with him and nobody else. How because of his remarks everybody in the class had started teasing him, calling him names. How sometimes even if he was not wrong, he would still make fun of him. There was silence in the hexagonal classroom as Ankit  pointed out instances when he had been made fun off.

He did not say this behind the teachers back. He did not take his mother to the principal and complain. He could have done any of these things but instead chose to blurt this out to the same teacher who made him dread coming to school,  knowing that after this he could have made his life more miserable.

That day looking at Ankit, the crybaby, the joker, the coward of the class, standing in his
crushed white shirt  with tears streaming down his face, I  realized he possessed something that fifty of us sitting in the classroom did not.

I wish I could say that I had the courage to point  this out to others . Or better still, that the others realized it themselves. Well, sometimes people don’t change. Just like sometimes, some people are seen as exactly the same people they are not.

a123,
Hmmm. Even bad teachers teach. And sometimes we learn lessons unexpected. He endured that which I would have fled. Though truly unfair he is likely the better for it. Ninth grade. I wouldn't do that again for anything. A story well worth the telling. Thank you for sharing it.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
