In an upside-down garden

My money comes from hard work, scrubbing dishes, brewing coffee and preparing chicken salad sandwhiches for cranky old ladies who complain about the value of the good ol' dollar and sip their iced tea, complaining that, although it is unsweetened, it is too sweet.  My money comes from long hours and minimum wage.  And my money poses but one question:  where does it all go?

A mere seventy-five percent of the money that I earn in two weeks finds its way into the bank, where it waits for me, for the time when I will find myself enrolled in college.  It is the other twenty-five percent that finds itself in my pocket.

My money goes to five dollar concerts in buildings with too much rent where kids can go to hang out, escape the streets.  My money goes to seeing my boyfriend who lives a half an hour away, to riding the bus downtown so I can see a movie on my birthday, to new thrift store clothes, and shoes that only cost two dollars.

My money goes to making sure I eat lunch, to taking my sister out for ice cream on a hot summer day, to buying a dusty camera so I can capture my life as I remember it.  My money goes to the Meijer photo lab, to black and white pictures of my boyfriend strumming his guitar, and sweet memories of shared kisses at a table in Denny's.

My money goes to mashed potatoes and applesauce, to picking up the tab every once in a while, to having time to laugh with my friends.  My money goes to acrylic paint and hard canvas, to cheap paint brushes.

My money goes to making memories, to spending time with my friends, to happiness.  And isn't that what money is supposed to be for?

Allysa,
You are super frugal. I am impressed by your discipline and your priorities. And I am impressed by your commitment. Nice write. And thank you for taking on the challenge. I wish you all the best in your endeavors!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
