Assignments From My Daughter #23
By Larry Chadwick
I miss you papa.

L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics.

Assignment #23 “My Hero”:

He was never President of the United States. He was a church Elder. Gorgeous and gregarious. Yet insecure. Serious. Yet mischievous. He was never a lawyer or an engineer. He was a furniture manufacturer. He was not a college graduate. He was a seventh grade dropout. He tried to be a hunter. Instead it made him a vegetarian. He was a workaholic. Yet a devoted father. He was an optimist. Yet struggled with hidden depression. He struggled with character flaws. But he was always and increasingly devoted to God. He was intense but good hearted. He was loved by many and respected by all. He moved often to follow his heart. And always left a little of it behind. He had aspirations of eternal wealth. Yet the reality of mortal poverty. Unknown to most. But he was the center of my world. My hero. My dad. No statue required.

Larry C,
I knew from the first sentence.....exactly who you were speaking about! I felt for sure you would try and surprise me but......!
I loved the read and felt a dad's smile. Enjoyed the he was and the yet nots and funny how the was....seemed so much more than the was nots! Bravo
on the write. I wish every child in the world could feel the emotions written here.
Through this write...I see a wonderful dad but someone on top of it all my thanks goes out to our Father....as your light and his shines thru.
A very nice well done tribute!

pictureme,
This one was predictable as rain. All my life. Was never able to help myself. Actually, never tried. And you are so right. My dad is gone not but I still have a Father. And bless you, always.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Seems to me that my little comment of a few weeks ago wasn't intended as something for me to do, after all.  It seems like it was more in line for you.

Karilea,
It is so true. This month will be two years. It is so hard to comprehend. You certainly re-lit my flame. Thank you. You're the best!

Larry,
It hadn't occurred to me who this man would be, but after I read it, I could easily see bits of him in you.  What a sensitive, humble, fun, life-loving individual he must have been. Enjoyed the treasury of your hero.

You know what. I remember how agonizing those impromtu essays were. Yet now I look back and I am very glad they got done. Although we did obnly a few I am thankful.

Larry, I like your hero essay. I am going to have to dig up my essays from my 11th grade english file when i get back to my moms house in california on the 13th.

I'll post them soon.

I enjoyed the choice of words in this piece.  Also, the message behind it is wonderful.  It did indeed touch my own Christianity.  It was also a beautiful appeal to the better sides of us all.

fractal007,
Thanks your response is very generous. I'd be curious how you chose your name and by the way, I love your tagline.

Kellie,
Good for your. I'm having a fun life but much more routine!

My name?  I like fractals and I like James Bond.  Fractals are cool because they're these endlessly complex shapes, kinda like the things we deal with in life.  James Bond is cool because he uses all sorts of gadgets to make big explosions and stuff...

miscellanea,
Ah, it doesn't get better then that. It's nice to remember. Thanks.

fractal007,
So I did have part of it figured out!  And thanks for taking the time to set me straight.

Larry, your post caused me to rewrite my tribute to my Dad.

A strong, proud, independent man, but not without a soft interior, he showed his love not by touch or words but the way he lived his life.

His death was gentle as was his living of life. Not by reprimand but by quiet example he taught:  Love, tolerance, understanding, forgiveness and the meaning of devotion.  We are not to mourn but celebrate his having lived.  He needs no stone engraved to his memory - Monuments crack and crumble -  his remembrance will be in every act of human kindness which any of his descendents display. This was his legacy.

From one  who also worshiped her Dad. martyjo

MartyJo,
What a lovely tribute. Thank you for sharing. I wish I had known him. Though I believe he would be proud in how he lives on through you. And thank you for your kindness.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
