Assignments From My Daughter #18
By Larry Chadwick

L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics.

Assignment #18 “Proper Clothes for The Young Adult”:

Well as I recall it meant no jeans in the classroom or the cafeteria. It meant no facial hair. And it meant no hair on the collar or the ears. It meant when the girls knelt on the floor their hemlines touched the floor. At least until they rolled the waste after they left their inspection. Odd in an era that spawned the mini-skirt and skin tight jeans for boys and girls. And we say that Christina and Brittany do not have a clue.

It seems common sense gets redefined in every generation. There is a reason that youth are declared dependence on their parents tax returns. Because they still need supervision and direction. Parents will never stop offering it in spite of protests by their teenagers. Peers do not establish what is proper anymore than pop stars do. My dad rarely had to remind me that while I lived in his home he set the standards. Often his standards were higher than my friend’s parents.

That does not mean we shop in our parent’s closets. But it also does not mean we set our standards based on MTV or our peers. What is right is not always in style. But what is in style is not always right. That is why we have parents. With confidence I am persuaded that your parents will have an opinion about what are the proper clothes for the young adult.

Larry:

I went to school through the 10th grade, in Canada.  The rules of dress were much more strict than the States, as I found out. In Canada, girls were not allowed to wear slacks or jeans of any kind in school.  When we had to walk to school in the winter cold, we had to take a change of clothes with us and change before class.  The girls and boys did not even use the same doors to get into school. Any girl who acted immodestly was promptly suspended from class and asked to stay home for a few days.
How times have changed!  Of course, that was a good many years ago..........I won;t say how many!

Larry C, :-)
I am so glad you have posted 3 more of your assignment! You are doing well! In this one,
Your value and worth as a parent shines thru. I totally agree and think the parent should be in their childrens life, guiding, guarding, and protecting. Its funny how now my grown children will say some of the same things they hated me saying! :-)
Thanks for sharing!

In 1968, the vice principal pulled me out of class the first day of school and ask me if I was a new girl in school.

I was suspended for three days for the length of my hair which was maybe a quarter inch over my ears.

We had the kneeling rule for girls, boys had to wear belts and shirts had to be tucked in and of course, no t-shirts.

The year after I graduated, the dress code was abolished.

Your assignment certainly brings back memories.

Betty Lou,
With that many hints you don't need to say when! And thank you for your fun and kind reply.

Pictureme,
Funny how life's cycles repeat themselves. And thank you for you continued kind words.

Fisherman,
That was indeed a wonderful year. Full of many memories for me as well. Thanks. :.

What is right is not always in style. But what is in style is not always right

So definitely true, how many times did my parents give me their opinion on the what was proper to wear... and now I hear myself telling it to my son. Sigh..but isn't it great? yeah.

Maree,
Thank you. Amazing the similarities between generations. And for you too.
