Assignments From My Daughter #17
By Larry Chadwick

L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics.

Assignment #17 “Gold Is Where You Find It”:

I met a real life prospector in the superstition mountains in the 1960s. He could have been the leading model in “Gold Miner’s Weekly”. Burro, tools and all. He claimed to know exactly where the Lost Dutchman’s gold was. At twelve years of age I decided he was either the least greedy man I had met or the biggest liar. Gold was there but I doubted he had found it.

When I was fifteen I met a man whose king size bed was placed in the master bedroom closet of the home he was building as they wanted to live there while it was finished. Their new home included servant’s quarters. I was easily persuaded he was the smartest man I knew. But his money failed to inspire me. Gold was there but so what.

Most of my life I watched a man progress systematically to the peak of his profession. And even then his living was meager. When quizzed about the rational of his sacrifice his answer was immediate and direct. It was what he believed God wanted him to do. He was respected even by those who cared little for his style. That was genuine gold. I really miss my dad.

Larry:

What fine memories you must have of your dad. I miss mine too and he has been gone for 47 years.  He died young from lung cancer. I too, treasure the memories!

Hi Larry C, :-)
You seemed to have wisdom at the age of 12 that carried on to your today! Genuine gold,
you seem to have also discovered. It enlightened me to read a bit about the man who created genuine gold! :-)
You made your father proud and are reinforcing "genuine".
Nice write!

Betty Lou,
I'm sorry for your premature loss. My dad made it to 72. God bless our fathers.

Pictureme,
You say such encouraging and affirming words. They are genuinely appreciated. Thank you.
