Assignments From My Daughter #14
By Larry Chadwick

L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics.

Assignment #14 “The Influence of Motion Pictures”:

It was in her classroom with her students, two days after her untimely death, that I learned of the influence of motion pictures on our lives. In her literature class the students were required to read “The Great Gatsby” before they watched the movie produced , by A&E. Much discussion and insight followed. But this form of study in literature was certainly not invented by Miss Chadwick.

In the course of that day the students and I reminisced for hours over the stories that we knew of Miss Chadwick. I saw many knowing smiles. We shared many laughs. And often we cried both in joy and sorrow. But it was the seventeen year old girl, that was a Junior, who helped me understand more about the influence of my daughter and of motion pictures. She raised her hand indicating that she wanted to share. And between tears and laughter said that “only Miss Chadwick could find ‘Legally Blond’ as a teaching aid to help her students understand the class struggle between the rich and the poor.”

JM,
Bless you for being so faithful. I won't have internet at home until mid-summer. So I only get on sporadically but have been inspired by Karilea and pictureme to finish my daughter's assignments. I needed it too. Bless you for being my faithful freind.
