It was morning when I saw the step of her
upon the old wooden porch, standing there
quietly, waiting, wanting to knock...unsure.

We both, both of us, riveted to our own
shadows.  Afraid to let time come between
faces once so youthful.  Would she feel that...

Seeing her through the curtains, slightly
open...yet closed to unknowing eyes, blue
eyes, kind eyes...sensual eyes...should I...

I tried to step, yet the energy seemed
frighteningly, pitifully inadequate.  My
foot glued firmly to the wooden floor, one
suffering from far too few polishes and
far too many steps.

Oh, but to just be able to take that step
forward, to shout out “Coming!”....
To open an old weathered door....It and I both
having suffered much abuse from the daily
warming rays of a setting sun....will she walk away, or...

Turning slowly away from the door,  hesitating,
reaching inside her purse, removing a letter...
Terrifying suspense after 20 years of living
separate lives,  places...

Closing my eyes,  imagining that moment when I last
saw her,  remembering the tenderness of her
touch,  the electrifying kiss,  lingering for days.

The sudden sound of a car door startling me....she
pulled slowly away,  glancing back...hoping...

Sadness overwhelming me,  shamed by my hesitance..
Looking down toward my feet....lying there before
me,  a white envelope,  addressed to me...
postmarked 20 years before...the blazing words of
"return to sender,  address unknown"  standing
out against the perfect penning of a delicate
hand...
